Anyone up? High fever question?
Ryan was diagnosed with an ear infection today. He just now woke and his temp was 103.9. I gave him tylenol and just put him back to bed but is there anything else I can do? When is a high fever too high? I'm so nervous it's going to get out of control. TIA

Re: Anyone up? High fever question?
First thing first, take a deep breath. Remember that a fever means his body is fighting the infection, so it's not a terrible thing. Do you have infant motrin? When Ava's fever gets that high, we alternate tylenol and motrin every four hours and it brings her fever down. Also, cool compresses on him, but if he's sleeping, quite honestly, just leave him. You can also do a luke warm, not a cold, bath.

Thank you - I do have motrin in the house. Give that next time he wakes or should I wake him in 4 hrs and give it?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone up? High fever question?
Personally, if it was me, I'd let him sleep, but if he wakes up in roughly four hours, I'd do the motrin. Sleep is what they need most.

I agree, except i know my doctor told me 6-8 hours with motrin, 4 hours if it was tylenol

Yes, but when you're alternating them you can give them every four hours. Because then, technically, you wouldn't be giving Motrin again for 8 hours. I just double checked on askdrsears.com and it even says you can alternate every 3 hours if need be. But as for the febrile seizure, you should just keep the child safe, but that it's generally not dangerous and that you can't really do anything to prevent it.

Re: Anyone up? High fever question?
Thank you! That's why I came on here - to be prepared just in case.
I found this too - essentially there's not much to do:
Treating Febrile Seizures If your child has a febrile seizure, stay calm and:
Make sure your child is in a safe place and cannot fall down or hit something hard. Lay your child on his or her side to prevent choking. Watch for signs of breathing difficulty, including any color change in your child's face. If the seizure lasts more than 10 minutes, or your child turns blue, it is probably a more serious type of seizure — call 911 right away. It's also important to know what you should not do during a febrile seizure:
Do not try to hold or restrain your child. Do not put anything in your child's mouth. Do not try to give your child fever-reducing medicine. Do not try to put your child into cool or lukewarm water to cool off. Again, unless the seizure lasts for more than 10 minutes or your child has trouble breathing, there's no need to rush to the ER.
When the seizure is over, call your doctor for an evaluation. Some kids who have a febrile seizure will have another in the future.
The doctor will examine your child and ask you to describe the seizure. In most cases, no additional treatment is necessary. The doctor may recommend the standard treatment for fevers, which is acetaminophen or ibuprofen. But if your child is under 1 year old, looks very ill, or has other symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting, the doctor may recommend some testing.
Febrile seizures can be scary to witness but remember that they're fairly common, not usually a symptom of serious illness, and in most cases don't lead to other health problems. If you have any questions or concerns, talk with your doctor.

that makes sense if your alternating the two, i didnt realize she was also, yes, i just looked the sheet the doctor had given us and it says 6-8 for Motrin alone, but alternating every 4 hours (we never alternated though, i would just stick to one or the otherr-just a personal preference)

Re: Anyone up? High fever question?
From what my ped. told me febrile seizures are caused just by a fever being high...it is how quickly the fever elevates. If you rotate motrin and tylenol every 4 hours you will be able to keep it down so it doesnt spike too quickly.

This is true. The febrile seizure is much more likely to occur during the phase that a fever is rising quickly and to a very high point. Once a child has a high fever, they are already past the point when the febrile seizure likely would have occurred.
Hope DC is still sleeping. I wouldn't wake up to give DC fever reducing medicine.....from my recent experience they will wake up on their own when they need more medicine. Just do your best to keep DC hydrated. Give sips of water whenever they wake up.
Hope the fever passes soon!
