Anyone's NB fail the hearing test at the hospital ?
My DS failed the hearing test at the hospital, and the nurses said it is most likely due to him being a c-section ( the fluid was not "squeezed" out)...They also could not get a good reading in the nursery because the probe or whatever they use was not big enough for his ear canals, and the audiology dep't was too busy on the day of discharge and we didn't want to wait...The nurses said he has no problems hearing and he turns his head etc...But since they couldn't pass him, we have to have him re-checked @ the hospital.
We go back at 6 weeks ...
Can anyone tell me what the test entails ( they would like for him to be asleep ,mmmmm K ) ..Did you get the results right there on the spot ?
Thanks !

My DD did, but they just did it again while we were in the hospital. It was fine the second time.
I think they just put something in their ear.

Re: Anyone's NB fail the hearing test at the hospital ?
My ds failed in one ear and we had to bring him back to the hospital for a follow up test. I had a c-section as well and was told at the time that it was not uncommon for c-section babies to fail at first. To be honest I don't even remember the follow up test. I brought a bottle with me in case he needed it, it was a quick test and they immediately told me he passed. Good luck, try not to worry too much!

Re: Anyone's NB fail the hearing test at the hospital ?
When Jack was born Stacey for whatever reason the machine was not working in the NICU. We went back a couple of days after he got home & they did it right in the nursery. He was asleep the whole time (& this was even w/ the infant alarm going off--some mom took the baby off the floor & they didn't shut off the alarm) & J slept right through it.
We were done in 5 minutes. They just put the probe in his ear; wasn't a big deal at all.

My dd did. I completely lost it when they told me she failed. My mom is half deaf so that's the first thing I thought of. Luckily when she was retested she passed.

I used to do the hearing screening at the mother baby ward. C-section babies definitely have a higher fail rate, but the test in general when a baby fails the initial test they almost always pass subsequent tests.

Thank you for this ( I know in my heart he's ok, but of-course I can't help but worry )
And thank you to all who shared their experiences

Your welcome. I worked there for about 4 years, and in those 4 years out of all the babies I worked with I think 2 had hearing problems.

Thank goodness for "related topics" at the bottom! I completely forgot about this but apparently DS1 didn't pass it at first (it was inconclusive) but passed it on a subsequent test. Now at 4 1/2, his hearing is perfect (although he has also perfected selective hearing )
