apartment or house

Although we are not ttc yet, DH and I are probably going to be pregnant before we have a house. Thankfully, our landlords are okay with us having a baby in the apt.Chat Icon
Just out of curiosity how many of you rent with a baby and how many of you own your home (condo, etc.)?
Any input you have is welcomed!
TIA

Re: apartment or house

We had a stipulation,
No baby until we bought a home.

We just thought we would never feel we could afford a home once we had a family so we worked it out one step at a time.

For us we wanted to have the house first. we settled in to paying house bills for a year before we TTC'd. Since I knew we both wanted to continue to work we needed to know we could afford the house and daycare.

But it is a personal decision. I have so many friends that are still renting with a kid or 2 and it works for them.

We have a house but that's because we are a bit older. So we are more set financially.

I'm the "other."

We live in a co-op currently, but are in contract for a house. However, we still have to sell our co-op and we don't know if we'll close on the house before the baby arrives. Our closing date is currently a week and a half before my due date.

No, this isn't stressful at all for us. Chat Icon

When we became pregnant - we rented. We bought a house when my DD was 6 months old.
And we really forced ourselves to do it then- cause we were out of room

Re: apartment or house

We rent a 2br apt. DH could have gotten a promotion in a different area of the country, so we weren't settled, but he actually got it here. 1 week later, we found out we were having a baby. Our landlords are very excited about having a baby here and told us to paint the room any way we want. We are starting to look for a house though. But at least we have time because we won't be kicked out. Chat Icon

Re: apartment or house

we rent and are in a 2 bedroom house.
I just don't see that it is important to own a house b/f you TTC or have a child.. the most important thing is that the child is loved, not that it lives in a house...
we are still trying to figure out where we want to buy and don't take that decision lightly- so we'll see where we end up, but in the meantime we're happy where we are!

We rent a 2bdrm apartment. I agree with the pp - it's doesn't matter if you rent or own, as long as the baby is loved and cared for.

We can afford a house but it does not make financial sense for us right now. We will be moving out of state in less than 3 years. It was more important to us to start a family now than to wait until we had a home.

Other

We rented. Had baby#1.

Got killed in taxes even with daycare deductions & another dependent. Started looking the following summer.

Bought a house 1 year later while Baby#2 was 6 months old.

We closed on our house in May and I found out I was preggo in June.

ETA: We didn't wait until we bought a house to have a baby we were trying already when we decided to buy a home.

Re: apartment or house

I rent and have a baby. We felt that if we waited until we could buy a house, then we may never be able to have a baby.

I live in a one bedroom, but converted the dining room to make a two bedroom. Works well for us!

We own, but our house is so freakin small that I would rather be paying rent and living in an apartment. My b-i-l pays about $500 less than us a month (rent vs. our mortgage) and his apartment is close to double the size of our tiny converted beach house in Rocky Point Chat Icon

Re: apartment or house

I rent a townhouse in a development. I'm a single parent, so I highly doubt I will ever be able to afford to buy a house on Long Island. My townhouse is nice though and we have nice ammenities.

If a landlord tried to kick someone out because they have a baby, well any lawyer would have a field day with that case!

Re: apartment or house

I guess we fall into the other catagory. We own a co-op in the city. It is only one bedroom, but there is room for a baby. We plan on putting the place on the market a couple months after the baby is born. Hopefully, we will sell it in a timely manner and be able to upgrade to a house in the burbs.
