Re: apartment or house

We bought a house while pg...it was a way to get us on the ball for sure!
But we wont be in the house due to repairs/updates until the baby is about 1/2 months old.

Re: apartment or house

we waited til we had our house. And my cousin went so far as to tell us we should wait to have a kid until we'd been in the house for 3 years. She said have it completely finished in terms of decorated and furnished the way you want b/c once you have them you'll never tackle any more of those kinds of projects again. I thought she was crazy but looking at it now I see that she was right we don't have any time to paint or refinish furniture now. We just manage to eat and sleep somtimes. Chat Icon

I seem to be in the minority, but I would never put off TTC just to own a house. What if you wait too long, have that beautiful house and then can't get pregnant? I'm not saying you, but this is what would worry me. We were renting when we TTC. We ended up buying a house while I was pregnant, but we were planning on renting for a while, we kind of fell into buying the house.

Re: apartment or house

We purchased a house while being PG. We had to, we couldn't rent here in NY with 2 big dogs and a baby on the way. The rent would have been just as much as my mortgage.

I completely agree!!

We didn't want to wait to have kids...we will not have a home for prob some time, but its ok b/c we love where we rent and are so happy we made that decision to try for a baby. everything happens for a reason! Would I love to own a home right now? Sure! But I know it'll happen sooner or later, main thing is that DS is very loved and we are happy Chat Icon

You arent in the minority. This is how we feel too. We are older (both 36), just married one year,we are TTC and we are not in any position to buy a home.

Conception isnt coming to us as easy as we thought it would (though we are incredibly hopeful despite my impatience). We have no idea of what the road ahead of us will be as far as TTC at this point. I realize that many women have very healthy children well into their 40s and thats great for them, but it is not something I would like to do. DH and I have discussed this at length - he knows how I feel and supports my feelings. It is a very personal thing.

It isnt always as simple as being older and thus having more money - life throws you curves and curves cost money. You would be surprised how many people assume we have more than we do.

This is our situation. We are dealing with it. Is it ideal? No. Would we prefer to own a home before having a child? Absolutely - but not enough to put off our dream of being parents any longer than we already have by marrying later in life - another personal choice. We WILL own a home some day - just later on down the line.

Re: apartment or house

Well, we go back and forth on this. We currently rent a 1BR in the city. Our lease is up in Sept so we either need to move into a 2BR (where rent is Chat Icon ) or buy. Buying a 2BR in the city is a *little* out of our price range right now so its either the burbs or rent. We're leaning on continuing to rent in the city for convenience and adjustment with work and baby. We're getting KILLED on taxes though so that's what's throwing our plan off. who knows what we'll do...

we bought a 2 bedroom condo, 5 months before we got married and 9 months before i got preggos, it was real important to my DH that we own a place before trying to concieve, we plan on selling it in like 3-4 years and buying a house as it's perfect for one child , but will get cramped when we have a 2nd

Re: apartment or house

we rent. We just moved to NC, DH just started with a new company, we became a 1 income family..and then parents..to many things going on, so we put off house buying. Our heads were spinning. I am so happy in my apartment, I love where I live. Maybe in a year we will start looking again, but I doubt it. I think we are just going to invest in something else. I love being able to have maintence come fix things for free at this time in our lives. Stress free living..budgeting is easy.

We rent a house. I suppose for LI, we are on the younger end of the spectrum...but we also know a house is years away for us [student loans and young careers] so we never made having a house a necessity for our family growing.

We rent an apt. It's perfect for us right now - we're renewing our lease, which will keep us here til May 08. We'll start looking for a house in Jan 08 or so.

We're just not ready to give up a city lifestyle yet. We love it too much!

We own a house but we did not wait to TTC until we own a house. We just got married later in life, DH had just bought the house before I met him, we got married, then TTC. I don't think I would have waited to have a house to TTC.

Re: apartment or house

When I found out I was pg the first time, we decided to look for a house since our lease was up. We were lucky and found a house relatively quickly. We went for it bc out mortgage ended up being $400 cheaper than our rent.

You can make it work in any situation. My parents rented until I was 12 yrs old. It was the 5 of us in our apt. Never felt like I was missing anything by not growing up in a house. Good luck Chat Icon

Very true! I did not live in a house until I was almost 20. We lived in the City and I only knew of apartments or co-ops in a highrise.
