Are you banking baby's cord blood?
I just posted on Parenting, but I figured you ladies might be looking into it too.
We're definitely banking, but not sure with who yet. We're trying to decide between CBR and Viacord and right now I still don't know the real difference between them.
If you're banking privately, who did you choose and why??

DH and I are in the same boat. We have all the information packets, just have to read through everything and narrow it down. That is this weekends project.

one of my coworkers told me that you can "donate" your CB ... in the future, if you need it and it hasnt been used, you can buy it back! Maybe look into this?

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
We didn't... for A LOT of reasons too lengthy to get into. Basically banking it doesn't guarantee you can use it on your child, they haven't been "banking" cord blood long enough to determine the effects of the freezing process on the quality of the stem cells etc and a bunch of other stuff.
Alexa received all of her cord blood as it is considered to be part of their blood supply and can contain up to 20% of their total blood volume. There are also studies that say the stem cells in the cord blood are crucial for babys immunity.
So our midwife did not cut the cord until it stopped pulsing and the baby has received all her blood.

This is exactly what I want to do-I wonder if it can be done with a C though. I would rather Miss Bean receive all of the cord blood.

Ooh, this is interesting! I did see once on a baby story (or other baby show) that a baby was born very premature and the doctor like squeezed the contents of the cord to the baby - or so it seemed. I always wondered why other doctors don't do this.
My only concern is that we have a very long history of diabetes on BOTH sides of our families and even my little niece was just diagnosed. For something like diabetes, you would need your own cord blood to be able to use it (or so it seems from the research I've done), so I would hate to pass up on this. But I wonder if they pass the cord blood contents onto the baby at birth if it has the same effect???

Not usually.. but you can try and talk to your OB and tell them its very important and see what they say....

well they aren't suppose to squeeze the cord.. it breaks down the RBC's but rather just let the blood continue to flow to the baby.
I'm not sure how her own Stem cells would help in diabetic treatment right now... I'm not sure they have teh correct research yet to use it. I know with many many cancers you CAN't use your own Stem cells because it contains the predisposition for the cancerous ones
A lot of the blood that is in the cord turns into different types of cells that helps in the bodys own natural immunity...So depriving the baby of those cells is essentially depriving her of some of her bodys own basic immunities...

Ahh, ok. So now I really wonder why that doctor squeezed the cord!! lol
Ok so learning something new... I know right now the diabetic treatment is not actually available right now, but I am hoping in a few years they may have made enough progress to be able to use it.
Definitely have to ask these questions now!!! Thanks Maria!

They may... or they may not. And if they do... we aren't sure how these stem cells are actually responding to the freezing process over long periods of time..... In the meantime she could have a stronger immune system from all the blood in her cord that she received at birth...
Its a hard decision to make.... You need to do what feels right to you. Just make sure you do A LOT of research on both sides..
Oh and you like how I'm refering to your DC as a .....

I looked into this- there are only 2 hospitals on LI that do this- and Good Sam isn't one of them. Also- they are really limited with the times they will collect- so if you deliver on a weekend or over night- you'd be out of luck.
ETA: I did go to a very informative seminar on all of this- but I agree with EVERYTHING Blissful has said. I had these same doubts even after the seminar.

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
We did for both DS and this pregnancy. We went with Viacord. It seemed to be the most advanced and seemed to be the company that is doing the most research. It was also who my Dr recommended! I just found that the only negative to banking was the $$, and there could be a lot of positive possibilities in the future. It is something that I hope to have wasted my money on, but if I need it, it could save my child's life. But, that's me...I'm the kind of person who will drop money for stupid things and go out to dinner, etc...so I couldn't forsee not spending the money on this.

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
I asked the ob this at our first appointment. He told me flat out that if I was his daughter, he would suggest us taking our 2 or 3 thousand dollars and open a mutual fund or other account, and every year that we would normally send the check to the cord bank for storage fee, add to the account instead. There are public storages in the event you ever need it.

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
We decided to do this. DH's research showed that it probably could not be used for , but could be used for a sibling, etc. since most of what they can do now is often genetic and would be in the cord blood too (made me think back to various people's stories of having another kid to get a bone marrow match, etc.). When he said this to me, I said, ok, so we'll bank all of our DC's cord blood. For us, this just felt like the right call and also who knows what they'll be able to do in the future with the cord blood.
We went with CBR - our friend who's a doctor used them for 2 reasons - they own their storage facility and have the highest retrieval rate - so we used them too and were able to make use of a referral discount. This is also who my OB recommends. My OB also thought if you could afford this, it might be worthwhile, but that it was not something to do instead of something else, like savings for education, etc. We're fortunate enough to be able to do both so why not - though it is like insurance, we have it and hope we'll never need to use it.

Right- NS Manhasset LIJ New Hyde Park I think are the only 2 on the Island.
I could be mistaken about the weekend thing- that was what they said at the CBR seminar- but it was all part of a sales pitch.
I wish they would make it easier to donate. It's so silly

We did w/ ds and will this time, too. My dh is adopted, so we banked ds#1's more for him, than anything else. Now since we're banking baby to be's cord blood, all 3 of "my boys" will have options. We used Viacord & took advantage of their payment option, I think we get a discount this time...

I was told that there is only a 50% chance that DC would be a match for the father.
Is this true?

Wow I didn't even know that every hospital doesn't have the resources to do it. I'll definitely have to look into that.
