Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
We have not started to do our research on this yet. The only things I know about it are from reading some posts on this site. Can someone share the approximate cost? I know each company is different.
TIA.

We didn't... for A LOT of reasons too lengthy to get into. Basically banking it doesn't guarantee you can use it on your child, they haven't been "banking" cord blood long enough to determine the effects of the freezing process on the quality of the stem cells etc and a bunch of other stuff.
Alexa received all of her cord blood as it is considered to be part of their blood supply and can contain up to 20% of their total blood volume. There are also studies that say the stem cells in the cord blood are crucial for babys immunity.
So our midwife did not cut the cord until it stopped pulsing and the baby has received all her blood.
Hi - just posted that DH and I have not done our homework on cord banking yet. But I never heard of giving the blood back to the baby until reading posts on this site. Can you tell me if this is called something? Just wondering what exactly to google to find out more about it Thanks!

I can only speak for Viacord...that's what I used for DS and I didn't do anymore research for this child. Viacord is approx $1800 for the initial fee. And then it is $125 each additional year. (You can get a discount if you pay for like 18 years up front or something...but I don't have that kind of money!!!)

. I know with many many cancers you CAN't use your own Stem cells because it contains the predisposition for the cancerous ones
A lot of the blood that is in the cord turns into different types of cells that helps in the bodys own natural immunity...So depriving the baby of those cells is essentially depriving her of some of her bodys own basic immunities...
This is why we decided not to do it. The cord is really only good for siblings. If you pay attention to the commercials in both of the big ones (I think viacord and cbr) the mother is talking about how her 2nd child's stem cells helped her first child.
After all the research I did I really feel that 1- it is more beneficial to let the cord pulsate for 3 minutes or so and 2- the banking business really preys on nervous new parents. There are just tooo many things about it that make the chances of using it insanely low AND the chances of it then even working even lower.
ETA We would have done it if anything it cures ran in our families at all.

Yesi, I just saw that diabetes runs in your family! I know they are doing tons of research and trials using cord blood to cure it! I'd def bank if I were you!
I responded on Parenting, but I'll also reply here- I did bank Frankie's cord blood with Viacord

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
I plan on banking my baby's cord blood. The reason we decided to do it was primarily because FIL could possibly use it and his neurologist asked if anyone had cord blood banked because in the future they are hoping to use stem cells to repair certain brain cells and this could mean a world of difference.
Also, as far as waiting for the cord to stop pulsing, I have heard that there could also be negative effects to the baby, so please do your research before you decide to make that decision.

It's called delayed clamping or waiting to clamp the cord until it stops pulsating.... Most OB's will do it if you ask ahead of time and remind them during the delivery. I'm not sure you can do this if you have a c-section though

I've never heard of negative effects to the baby because of delayed clamping done properly.
The only thing I've read is that a practitioner is not suppose to "milk" or squeeze the cord and push the blood towards the baby because it will break blood cells and can cause an increase chance of jaundice but that was an old school practice done in the 70's and 80's and you need to make sure baby is at the same level as the cord not higher or lower
I'd be interested in what articles you read about negative impact

I have read about an increase likelihood to jaundice, although I must admit I have not done a ton of research, but that is why I said to do research before you make the decision.

This is exactly what I want to do-I wonder if it can be done with a C though. I would rather Miss Bean receive all of the cord blood.
It can be done and the cord might even be long enough for you to hold her while they wait for it to stop pulsing

Yes, DH and I decided to bank our child's cord blood. We have decided to go with Viacord. We weighed the pros and cons and found that we could afford it so we figured "why not". It can't hurt.

Funny I just read how untrue that is (jaundice in delayed cord clamping) and all I'm reading online is how clamping immediately can harm the baby. DH and I are leaning towards NOT banking cord blood. Would like to give it back to baby.

I've read that this does not apply at all if u don't get an epi and if u do it is still extremely minimal as compared to the risk u have anyway.

I don't think it's reliable to just read some random person's blog or something but today most reliable resources are duplicated in electronic formats. Basically the entire library is on the internet if you know how to find it.

thanks but no worries I will be asking OB for his opinion as well. I'm reading from reliable medical sites - all saying the same thing I mentioned.

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
I'm undecided on this as well even at this late juncture. Everything I've read and my discussions with my OB and other Dr.'s have convinced me it's pretty much a complete waste of money and a complete waste of the cord blood. However, for that small chance that they DO make some sort of progress on this and one of my children DO need it AND there is enough to use and it is still good and even usable for the specific need I'm wondering if I should just do it for the small just in case - however, I hate the idea of wasting the cord blood - I donated to the public bank for DS and at least there it will get some use and the money although only a little now would grow in his 529 plan and actually be something he uses.
Unfortunately, the only real reasons I have read to do this come from the companies themselves or the OB's that get kickbacks.
Yet, I think we are probably going to do it - just b/c "what if?"
We will go with Viacord if we do it - on our OB's recc (who was very strongly against it to begin with actually).

my OBGYN actually said it can be very dangerous for the baby as it increases the iron and red blood cells in the baby's bloodstream to a level that is too high. i can't remember what else he said as it was months ago.
he said he would never do this for a patient and doesn't understand why it is being done.
and he is not your "typical" OB--this is a man who allowed me to push for 5 hours with never a mention of a C/S and would have allowed me to push/do whatever i wanted for as long as i wanted (and as long as the baby wasn't in distress).
so, i agree, do real research. the internet isn't always the most reliable source.

Re: Are you banking baby's cord blood?
Thanks to everyone for their input! I am really torn. The main reason we really want to do it is because of all the diabetes that runs in our families (many people have it, including both of our fathers, some grandparents, uncles, niece, etc. Long history of it). I just wonder if one day they CAN use the cord blood stem cells to cure diabetes and what if one of our children gets it... you know? I know there's a public bank, but I still don't know how that works so I have to look into that.
