Are you planning to get an epidural?
Is there a reason why someone would not want pain meds?
I'm the biggest wimp so I'm going to ask for pain meds as soon as I get to the hospital.
If they can give me valuum to calm me down, I'd welcome that too.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
Abso-freakin-lutely!
I joke that I want to see trails when I am in labor!!
I think people try to do it naturally for the experience, and because some believe that this is the best and healthiest way to deliver.
Personally, if the drugs can help me get through it-- I am ALLLLLL for it. I am too scared otherwise.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
My plan is to hold off as long as possible on all meds (including an epidural) with the hopes of not having any at all. Not saying I won't cave, but I'm going to try.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
Yes, I plan on taking whatever they want to give me. BUT keep in mind (as per my ob) no epi until at least 3-4 cm dialated. So you will feel some pain.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
I've delivered 2 children with epidurals, and 2 without(one at home!). I have had experience with both, and I can say without a doubt I preferred natural.
Epidurals can cause a stall in labor, which in turn leads to more interventions(like pitocin). Once you get an epi you are confined to your bed. There are risks to epidurals as well. Its been almost 4 years since my last epidural and I STILL get pains and numbness in that spot.
By laboring naturally, it allows a woman to move with the contractions. Movement and changing of positions helps the baby turn and move down, and can also help turn the baby to the optimal position.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
Nope!!!! I'm having my baby at home....No epidurals here. I'm not a big fan of needles or anyone messing with needles near my spinal cord.
I plan on laboring and delivering at home in a quiet, loving, safe enviroment surrounded by people who love and supposrt me and my fabulous entourage of HIGHLY qualified and professional midwives who will do everythign in tehir power to give me the best birth experience ever....
It may seem strange to some but I am actually looking forward to feeling everythign my body is doing and "working with my baby" as a team to bring her into the world.
It may not be the most pleasant sensations but I think that it will be an empowering one to me. Women all over the world deliver babies without medications or epidurals and so will i!

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
Nope. I had a natural childbirth last time and it was an amazing experience and hope to do it again.
In fact there was talk of me being induced which I was dead against because I really want a drug free birth.

yup! The Drs. in my practice will let you have the epi at any time, there is no waiting until you are dilated a certain amount.

Is there a reason why you can't get the drugs right away?
I'll have to ask about this in depth at my next doctor's appointment.

Getting drugs right away can stall labor.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
I am all for epis. The only thing I have heard from some BTDT moms is that being induced with pitocin is not good. Apparently it's better to let nature take its course unless there is a medical emergency. In that case, I would want a c-section anyway.

No epi, if possible for the same reasons above. Also some women get so numb they aren't able to push correctly. I definetely do not want to me restricted to my bed. Walking, squatting all helps the baby make it's way down. I rather have gravity due more of the work.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?
No epi for me unless things go wrong. I didn't have one with my son either. The reason why I don't want one is I just don't want to have to deal with the potential complications of the epidural. The benefits just don't out-weigh the risks for me.
That being said, if I were having a problem during labor and I thought the epidural could help me, I would get one, but I won't have one if my labor progresses normally.

I feel the same way. I am more afraid of the epi than I am of the labor pain. I am not completely opposed to it, though. I just have to see how much pain my body can handle, and I won't know until i am in that situation!
