I've delivered 2 children with epidurals, and 2 without(one at home!). I have had experience with both, and I can say without a doubt I preferred natural.
Epidurals can cause a stall in labor, which in turn leads to more interventions(like pitocin). Once you get an epi you are confined to your bed. There are risks to epidurals as well. Its been almost 4 years since my last epidural and I STILL get pains and numbness in that spot.
By laboring naturally, it allows a woman to move with the contractions. Movement and changing of positions helps the baby turn and move down, and can also help turn the baby to the optimal position.
i totally agree with this post .. i 've done it with and without and by far it's better without.. i will say that with my first having to be induced, being scared of the unknown and in labor for a full 24 hours on pitocin, i don't think i couldve done it in the end without my epidural.. i was 19 hours into labor and i was tired and miserable.. and the pitocin was strong. with my second and 3rd baby it was a walk in the park. not too much pain and i delivered in 8 hours and then in 6 hours..
with this baby i won't be getting one either.

I've already got a running joke with my OB about pre-registering for an epidural. I don't doubt that my body can do without, I just hate pain, and if I could make the experience more comfortable I think it would be best. To each is to own...I'm definately pro pain relief. Sign me up.

It will probably be recommended that I have an epidural, if not a c-section  However, if I can go without one, for health reasons as well as pain, I will not have one. We will see.

I'm not one of those women who want to even attempt to do it naturally. (although I do understand why a lot of women do)
I just like the idea of making it as pain free as possible.

I'm going as long as I can without one. I would love to go naturally, but I'm sure the pain will get the best of me. I just don't want to slow down labor, and I hate the idea of being confined to the bed.

i was 8cm when i got my epi the first time, so i definitely experienced labor in all its glory 
getting the epi was absolutely, positively, the best thing i could have done. i was then able to enjoy the excitement of what was coming. i didn't mind not being able to move around because my labor was short, and i really didn't feel compelled to move around anymore once i didn't have anymore pain!
my epi was uncomplicated. it didn't interfere with my pushing at all - baby was out in just a few minutes once the pushing started.
i fear that i won't have enough time to get the epi this time around given how short my labor was the first time. but if i can i will be first in line!!!

I am another one of those people that thought I would never have children because of my fear of pain, but here I am! I honestly can't say right now because I am afraid of the epi and afraid of the thought of not having one- I guess I will have to see how things go- for all I know, I could end up a c-section candidate anyway (I was told that because I am so small that the chances are high that I would need a c-section . . .)

My plan is to hold off as long as possible on all meds (including an epidural) with the hopes of not having any at all. Not saying I won't cave, but I'm going to try.

I will be having a c-section so I will have a spinal. I had the epidural with DD after laboring for quite a bit and it ended up wearing off at the end
I think its great to have any idea of what you want but also to be flexible. The process of giving birth is an unpredictable one and we have to just go with flow as much as possible. Some labors are easy others are excruciating. Some don't have time to get an epi and some won't progress without one.

My Ob told me that he would consent to give me the epi whenever I felt I needed it. He said that he is no-one to tell a woman no when she needs help to manage her pain. I got it at 3cm and will get it early on again this time around.
ETA: I should add that I was induced with pitocin so that may have made me want it earlier on.

Nope.
I had it in for only one hour with my son. I did not know how dilated is was. I think I can do it on my own for the next one.
I labored for 17 hours without it! I am hoping the next labor will be shorter.
But you never know what will happen.......

with both of my pregnancies, as with this one, i dont/havent "planned" on it. with DD #1 i got one around 4-5cm, with DS i got one at 9.5cm. I keep all of my options open when going into labor

My 'plan' is to have it if I feel that I need it -
I have ZERO interest in being a hero and 'doing it natural' on principal - that's JMO - If I CAN do it w/o adding another drug into my system, I will - but if not - bring it on !!

I didn't have one with my first DD (but that was more than 12 years ago) and I had a midwife, at the time I was very young and my midwife gave me the mentality that natural is best, so I wasn't even thinking of a choice or requesting one. It wasn't bad at all but my labor was pretty quick considering other experiences I've heard from others.
I do believe there are benefits of going natural, and I will try to do so this time; however, this time, I will also be open minded and know that I have a choice but I don't want to jump into it - I do wonder if the reason my labor progressed so "nicely/quick" the first time was because I didn't have the epi, but at the same time I am aware that my next experience could be completely different
