Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

I would like to see if I can do it without anything. I do have a high tolerance for pain and I'm not big on taking drugs, but one never knows once it all begins.

YES!!! Drugs all the way! I'm a wimp when it comes to pain too though. And I get panic attacks, so knowing that's taken care of will (hopefully) help the panic.

Nope!!!! I'm having my baby at home....No epidurals here. I'm not a big fan of needles or anyone messing with needles near my spinal cord.

I plan on laboring and delivering at home in a quiet, loving, safe enviroment surrounded by people who love and supposrt me and my fabulous entourage of HIGHLY qualified and professional midwives who will do everythign in tehir power to give me the best birth experience ever....

It may seem strange to some but I am actually looking forward to feeling everythign my body is doing and "working with my baby" as a team to bring her into the world.

It may not be the most pleasant sensations but I think that it will be an empowering one to me. Women all over the world deliver babies without medications or epidurals and so will i! Chat Icon

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

Probably-I had one with DD and will probably have one with any future children.

As someone who was deathly afraid of needles, I wasn't sure I was going to get one. I was induced, had pitocin which really brings on the labor pains. After laboring for 12 hours on day one and 4 hours on day two, my fear of further pain overcame my fear of the needle and I went for it. What a blessing! Labor was actually a delight after that and I was able to really focus on the joy of bringing my daughter into this world.

With the exception of people who have already been through childbirth, I would recommend that everyone keep an open mind. It's great to have a "plan" but be prepared to "go with it". Some women plan to have an epi, but labor goes so fast they are too far along and can't have it. Others say "no, never, no epi for me" and then their labor pains are so strong that it becomes dangerous to you and your baby not to have some medication to allow you to focus on the baby instead of your pain.

Just some food for thought.

My plan is to hold off as long as possible on all meds (including an epidural) with the hopes of not having any at all. Not saying I won't cave, but I'm going to try.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

Not sure yet. I guess I will see how it goes. The idea of something in my spine freaks me out, but I have no idea what to expect pain wise.

My SIL had 2 without (1st was a super quick labor and there was no time, 2nd was premature so that was a whole complication and the baby was small - but she's fine now), and 1 with and she recommended that I do have it.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

I am a wimp when it comes to pain, so I am inclined to say yes, but I am going to let nature take its course and decide from there.

From what I hear, you can go into labor with this grand plan, but anything can happen, so I am going to go with the flow.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

I have no idea what to expect, so I'm not ruling it out, but I'd rather not. I have a relatively high pain threshold, so I'll see what I can do, I guess.

Re: Are you planning to get an epidural?

I had a great experience with the epidural when I had my son...felt not one twinge of pain, he was born in 5 minutes of pushing....

The epi let me sleep through dilation....I was so tired before I got it but couldn't sleep b/c of contractions.

And my son was so alert when he was born, the epi had no effect on him.

I will most definitely be asking for the epi the minute I get to the hospital this time around, lol!!!
