Are you safe from down syndrome if your ultrascreen test came back normal?
I know that there are false positives but can there be false negatives too?
My ultrascreen blood tests came back normal. I had major anxiety before getting the results back.
Can I relax or do I have to be worried about the 16 week AFP test?

What you have to remember is all of these tests are screening tests. They don't tell for certain whether or not disorders might exist, they only screen for certain markers that tell if the risk is increased. The only was to tell 100% is with CVS or amnio.
That being said, I don't think you should be worried.

I just went through all this.. and the above statement is correct. My ultrascreen results were terrific, but my AFP results not so much (I went through IVF though, and from what I read, women that go through IVF do get false positives with the AFP portion). My Level II also indicated some soft markers associated with Downs babies, so I had to have an Amnio which confirmed my little girl is healthy.

I don't know why I have such anxiety. I'm usually not much of a worrier!

Re: Are you safe from down syndrome if your ultrascreen test came back normal?
according to the statistics, the false negatives in an ultrascreen are MUCH more rare than the false positives.... so if it comes back positive, odds are still in many babies favor that they are healthy, and if it comes back negative, it's fairly CERTAIN that there's nothing wrong. Although there are always exceptions....
this is why I took solace in my ultrascreen results saying there's no elevated risk, and decided against something more invasive like an amnio.....

Me too! I did not have IVF though or any soft markers at our Level II. We had an amnio to confirm our little is healthy.

As sweet tooth said these are just screening tests, not a diagnosis. But if everything comes back normal it is unlikely there is an issue but of course there are always exceptions.

Every test I had came back normal and I still had an amnio probably because I know too much and from personal family experience.

That's a good sign. Odds are, AFP and Quad screen will come back better than ultrascreen, since hormones subside by then. But sure, anythign could happen. But yes, I would feel better if I were you b/c it's def a good sign. But I was still worried, it's normal.
