Area Rug Under Dining Room Table - Any Rules?
I thought the rule for a rug under a dining table was that you had to have enough rug so that the chairs are still on it when you pull them out...but I was just watching Color Splash on HGTV and the rug they put in the dining room ended a little past the chairs - not enough rug for the chairs to be pulled out completely and still be on it...
So my question is, if you have a rug under your dining table how much room do you have around the perimeter? Any pics?
I think a rug would look great under my table, but there is no way I can fit one that will allow me to pull all the chairs out (due to a wall and the entrance to my room - the rug would be jutting out into the hall)...

I plan on getting a rug to accomodate the chairs being pulled out.
I personally find it annoying for chairs to get snagged on the rug edge. Scratch that - I find it *really* annoying, to the point where it will bother me the whole time I'm eating dinner and I won't be able to get comfortable. I am getting annoyed just thinking about it.

I'm with Jenn on this one. I think it looks nice when it's large enough, but that is just me. Well me and Jenn.

here is our rug/table. I love a rug under the table esp on wood floors. I had extra room, but this rug didnt come in a larger size. I wish it was a little bigger. The chairs JUST fit on it. I think this was a 5x8 Image Attachment(s):

it would bug me if i pulled out my chair to eat and it was half on the rug and half off so I would try to find one large enought to accomodate that...

Our rug is big enough so that the chairs can be pulled and there is still rug around them. We didn't want to be scratching up the wood floors with pulling the chairs in and out

Me too and this is why I can't put and area rug under our dining table. It would extend out too much.

Re: Area Rug Under Dining Room Table - Any Rules?
i got a large rug to at least be able to extend our current table out all the way and still have the chairs on the rug. I don't like it halfway because the chairs get wobbly.

i would so that if someone was to sit and the chair was half on the rug half off that would be silly to me

Re: Area Rug Under Dining Room Table - Any Rules?
I thought the rule was at least one foot around all sides of the table (does that accomodate chairs?)
I don't think that you can trust HGTV at all...they do things just to look nice - I'm not sure they care about practicality.

Re: Area Rug Under Dining Room Table - Any Rules?
ok, i was thinking that it should be so you could pull out the chairs - it makes more sense that way! just double checking to see what everyone thought since i thought it was strange to see it the other way on TV...it didn't look bad, it looked nice, but it would def annoy me - so i guess no rug for us...
