As a child, did anyone else stand up in the backseat ?!

Thinking back now ( I was a child of the 70's) I remember both myself and brother standing in the back of my mothers Pinto holding onto the seats in front of us !! I had to be under the age of 5 !!

Anyone else do this ?

Also my MIL (who has 7 children) told me that before there were infant seats, some of the big pram strollers detached on top and you would lay the baby in that and place them on the seat , or put them on someones lap

I also remember riding in the back of the station wagon in a little seat facing backwards. No seatbelts, of course.

Yes. We had an old station wagon, and I was one of 6 kids. 3 sat in the middle row, guess where the other 3 kids were? Yep, rolling around in the back part of the station wagon. No seats there, just the cargo area. fun times, I remember them well. We used to lay down in it and tell my dad to turn fast so we would roll to the side!

Our 'treat' was riding in the back of our family pickup. It had the cab over it. All 4 of us used to stretch out back there and our parents would drive us home from whatever swim meet we were coming from.

There were no car seats when I was a baby...my mom use to take the bassinet off the carriage and place it on the back seat.........

As we got older I also remember being in the back of station wagons without seats belts.........

Dammmm I am old...........

we used to drive to florida and my father would load the top of the van with our luggage etc. the trunk part of the van was a makeshift bed we would sleep in.

we were 4 kids my grandma and my parents all in a 5 seater car LOL we were crammed to say the least driving to florida!!!

I remember sitting in the front, middle armrest (on top) in my dad's big Lincolns.

In 1977 he then cut out the seatbelts on his brand new Grand Prix (b/c it was a "pain in the neck" to get into the back seat!)---IMAGINE?

My brother & I weren't in carseats; but my mom said they had a carbed for the back seat?

I also remember rides in my friends' station wagon back seat.

OMG YES!!!!!! And my father would treat his favorite 'kid o' the day' to the "Speeding Bullet" - you got to sit on dad's lap in the station wagon while he drove down our street at TOP SPEED.

He also smoked in the car. ALL THE TIME.

It's crazy when I think back to being a child. There were 5 kids in my family and we would drive to florida in a pacerwagon (sp?) I always sat on the hump in the middle of the front seats with no seatbelts. I remembewr when they made seatbelts manditory and I was like this is annoying. LOL

We also had a stationwagon with the wood sides and backwards seat all the way in the back.

My Mother had a big orange van. She would drive us three kids and all of our friends every where.

I specifically remember coming home from the beach sitting in our open beach chairs in the back!!!!!

Please....we have pics of my dad taking all of us and our friends to McDonalds for my birthday. We were all shoved into a station wagon....about 10 kids. Who was standing, who was rolling around, etc and NO seatbelts.

oh - we did one worse. we used to have to be 'good' in order to sit in the way way back of the station wagon. by way way back - i mean that back storage section - me and brian used to SLIDE all over back there and it was a BLAST!

I was in a car seat in the early 1970s. My parents researched and actually found one. I think that it was made by GM.

I was never allowed to stand when the car was moving. My sister and I were always required to wear our seat belts when we were in the car. My mom says that when I was younger I would cry if I wasn't buckled in. I would also always "yell" at my Nana that she needed to wear hers.

I remember sitting on the 'hump' in the back between the 2 front seats.. that was PRIME seating! I could hear my parent's conversation AND see the view! I also remember laying across the ledge where the back window was and hoping my parents would hit the brake hard enough for me to roll off!

My DH's dad would put plywood in the backseat of their Lincoln or Grand Prix and a ton of blankets and pillows and they would sleep from Florida to NY!!!! Not to include when I was a kid we use to ride around in the back of my uncle's pickup while he drove 60+. FYI there was no cab over the back just the open road and us. (Think the movie OVERBOARD). You'd get out and have dead bugs all over your face, and teeth (sooo grosss)

I remember laying on the little shelf thing above the back seats-against the back windshield

I also remember sitting on the floor behind the front seats, playing.


We also had one of those station wagons with the seats that popped up in the back. Ours faced each other and of course, no seatbelts.

I did. I use to walk back and forth! Back then it was acceptable
