Re: As parents and teachers why has no one comment on the Obama Speech for next week?
Geez I'm old. I was already working when the OJ verdict came out and just remember people shouting in the streets.
I remember hearing some of Reagan's speeches when I was in school--which ones, I'm not sure. Then there was discussion about what he said. My parents didn't do this at home--they weren't unconcerned about my education, but they were both working hard and my mother was probably the one to initiate this, but she was never that interested in politics. So I see no harm in children hearing presidents speak at school, whether the address is meant for them or is a more general address for the nation.
Did hearing Reagan speak mold me into a lifetime conservative? No, I am a Democrat, liberal leaning, so quite the reverse. I find nothing creepy about talking to students about education and setting goals for themselves, even if they are quite young. True some of the non-nerds will not listen to him, but a few might and if anything he says resonates with them, great. As others have pointed out, many parents aren't going to do this with their kids at home. Whether you like Obama or not, he is our President and deserves respect for the Herculean task of achieving that office and doing the work involved (and yes, George W. deserved some respect just for this as well).

I wouldn't want MY child in class for this because *I* want to discuss this with her. And frankly I don't care for folks calling that opinion or choice 'ignorant' or 'naive' its my choice as PARENT. Heck its even less of an issue for me to hold my child back from this (if i could) than it is to hold a child back from sex education yet no one blinks at that these days.
As a PARENT I have that right. God knows lately I feel I have so few rights as parent.
But there are lots of things your DD will hear about in school that you probably want to discuss with her. Sex, drugs, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, etc. If you want to be sure you get to discuss these things with her before she hears it from someone else, I would either start really really early or consider home schooling-and I am not being snarky.
At least this is a good message and from an educated source IMO AND it's printed beforehand so parents CAN talk about it with their kids before they hear it in school.
I really don't understand why anyone would keep their kids home over this. That is JMHO.

Ditto. I think the only reason someone wouldn't want their DC to hear this is IGNORANCE!

I am not an Obama supporter AT ALL, and I have no issues with his speech. I read over what he will say and it seemed just fine.

Well wow.
First off I'd like to state again. I dont care that he *IS* speaking and honestly see no biggie with it. I did have an issue with the agenda in the materials itself.
Also, I actually agree with a few sane points put on here. Well said on a few points but a lot of it is just personal opinion and that THANK GOD we are all still allowed to have.
I think there are extremes on this subject but that will always happen.
I have read the ridiculously long lil speech. Now i ask... would any other prez have provided this? Im not saying im agreeing with the Obama camp or not.
I will say again ANY prez should/could/can speak to the kids.
I wouldn't want MY child in class for this because *I* want to discuss this with her. And frankly I don't care for folks calling that opinion or choice 'ignorant' or 'naive' its my choice as PARENT. I see no "HARM" as it is said over and over here to NOT have a child see it in class but instead at HOME.
Im new at this Mom stuff so tell me how that is seen as so evil? Though I can learn from you guys and I do take what you say into consideration for the future, I will say that I turn off any negative remarks to my ability as a mother, my intelligence or any reference to politics. Positive, constructive opinions are appreciated.
Why does your child hearing a speech by a President preclude you from discussing it with her? I think its great that it was shown in schools. I think he is an admirable man who made something of himself from nothing as well as his wife. He walked into a sh!t storm in thsi country and holds his head high and speaks eloquently. There are worse things for children to emulate

Re: As parents and teachers why has no one comment on the Obama Speech for next week?
if you read the speech it is a very inspirational speech about the importance of education and setting goals for yourself. I will never tell my children to turn off a presidential speech. Even when I disagreed with Bush, which was 99.9% of the time, I listened to his speeches. It is an important part of our political process. How can I make a decision about something if I am unwilling to even listen to what someone has to say? I am teaching my children to be a part of the process, not just someone who sits home and complains about it.

I should also add that some of the same parents who will keep their children home will allow them to play violent video games, watch near R rated movies and listen to very explicit music. In some places, the children even own guns and learn to kill animals at this age. But I guess being inspired to learn by our President is a big scary thing...

agreed..I would like to hear specifically WHY parents are not ok with their kids hearing it? ( in school)....SPECIFIC reasons and not just saying b/c I'm the parent that's why. I'm just really curious, no flames, just curious.
I want my children to also have respect for the President ( reagrdless of whom he is ) and for our Nation and I do think its disrespectful not to listen to what he has to say.
I'm sure in actuality teachers, people who come into your schools for lectures etc say PLENTY that you don't agree with ( the collective You) and as a parent you teach your child how to think critically....
sheltering them...from the PRESIDENT of all people...is just beyond me.
Like I said though, I havent heard any real comments on why people are bothered by this.

It's almost become a joke at this point to me. President Obama could cure cancer, create world peace, and find Hoffa and his nayayers will STILL cry foul. NOTHING he does is right apparently.
I mean, talking to children about the importance of education. To CHILDREN?!?? How DARE he?!

I am curious as well.
What is it about a Presidential speech made to school aged children in school so controversial? Even if you don't agree with one act of this presidency, why don't you want your children to listen to what he has to say and use that as an example to reinforce your teachings as a parent? Our children are bombarded with agendas and hidden agendas constantly and need to learn to listen to what they see and hear and form their OWN opinions from that. That is one of the greatest lessons that I, as a parent, want to teach my children....to listen and form their own, individual opinions. I want them to learn to think on their own and believe in their own opinions. This is one of the only ways I can think of that will help me to raise a healthy, happy adult.

Re: As parents and teachers why has no one comment on the Obama Speech for next week?
ok, i admit, i'm not the best with keeping up with politics these days (i was REALLY into it before i got pregnant, then my world turned upside down and i just don't pay attention as closely as i did) so i really don't know what this speech is really about. isn't it him trying to encourage kids to stay in school, welcome them back to school? if so, then why would ANYONE be opposed to kids watching this? it makes absolutely ZERO sense. like i said, i don't really know what the speech is about, so if someone could fill me in, i'd appreciate it! thanks so much

I completely agree that is your choice as a parent.
Since I was the poster that said to me it is encouraging ignorance to keep your child home, I wanted to include the definition of ignorance (which I'm not saying you don't know), in case you are mistaking what I am trying to say:
Ignorance is the state in which one lacks knowledge, is unaware of something or chooses to subjectively ignore information. This should not be confused with being unintelligent, as one's level of intelligence and level of education or general awareness are not the same. The word "Ignorant" is an adjective describing a person in the state of being unaware.Source: Wikipedia - Definition of Ignorance

WORD!!! If he had the ability to connect with and make an impact in one child's life, more power to him. There isn't enough encouragement for the youth of today to succeed.

Re: As parents and teachers why has no one comment on the Obama Speech for next week?
I showed the speech today in my class.
I didn't give the parents a chance to reject it. To do so, IMO, brings politics into the classroom where it does not belong.
He's our president. Period, end of story. When kids see their parents "refusing" to let them watch something that our president has to say, it shows disrespect for the position of the President. It teaches them to make an issue out of something that is a non-issue.
We watched the speech and had a very interesting discussion about it (I teach 5th grade). I thought the message was outstanding.

Whether or not I agree with President Obama's views, I would never keep my son from hearing what he has to say. Number one, I want him to learn to RESPECT other people's different beliefs and opinions, and to know that its ok to agree or disagree with them. Number two, I want him to be a well rounded person and eventually take political sides on his own. Until he is able to do so, I will continue to teach him respect and about the different political views.

Re: As parents and teachers why has no one comment on the Obama Speech for next week?
My school showed the speech today and we thought it was excellent. It had NO political agenda and was very inspirational. My tenth grade students applauded at the end and they usually hate everything. I think it is wonderful that the president took time to encourage the young people of this country and to tell them how important their education is. Anyone who would keep their children from listening to this speech obviously did not research what he would be saying. I can see no reason why someone would not want their child to hear this message. Unless of course you want your child to drop out of school!!
