Asbestos removal in school while classes are in session...
Does anyone know the laws regarding this? My nephew's middle school is planning on renovating all of the bathrooms during the school year. Are they allowed to complete asbestos abatement while the kids are in the building or does it have to be after school? (even then, I'm not happy about it). Do they have to do a clean air test when they are done? Are the parents supposed to be notified? My sister only found out bc she ran into one of his teachers during over the summer and they got on the topic of the construction in the school.

I don't think there are any laws about it, and if there were, I can't imagine a public school breaking a law like that. I've watched quite a few home improvement shows with asbestos abatement, and the air is often cleaner during the removal than before they started. They have constant real-time monitoring of the air inside the sealed off area, and outside the area. Some of the setups almost look like the scene from ET, when the house is sealed up. Most schools are fairly old, so I would imagine that this is happening on a regular basis all over the country.

My school does it all year long. They don't notify parents. It is done at night and notices are on the school doors. It is done very carefully and by companies that do this. They seal off rooms and use like space suits to do it.

My high school had to do this when I was in high school twenty years ago. The auditorium ceiling had to come down. The district did it over the summer so no students would be near the school. I remember that they closed the school to everyone and moved things that were previously scheduled to other locations within the district.

Abatement is highly regulated. The companies have to do all sorts of tests before during and after. I would not worry about it because they need to set up negative air for the areas and they take air samples all the time.
Any construction area would be separated from the students for safety no matter what they are doing.
