Asking for a raise question
I'm getting all my facts together to have a talk with my boss about a significant raise. I've never done this before and am super nervous. My question is I have a non boss who is my boss but not my boss technically. I have a great relationship with her. She has been my boss in the past but due to restructuring we both have the same boSS Now.
I want to go in with a number that could be negotiated to something I'm happy with but I'm not 100% sure what my number is yet. Would it be unprofessional to ask my non boss her opinion on my salary number? She has been in the industry for 30 years, me just 6. I want to use her as my mentor for this but again I'm worried it may be construed as unprofessionaL.
OPINIONS? SORRY for the typos, I hate this phone.

Asking for a raise question
Personally, I wouldn't go to her at this point, since you are in a position as her peer. If she were still in a supervisory role, or in a different department, I might think differently. I would search in other places for salary standards for your area, field and position. Anytime I've requested a raise, this is what I did and I enumerated the job functions and responsibilities that I had taken on since being hired/promoted to the other position/salary to help demonstrate why I was worth the increased salary. I've received 25% raises in that way (though not in years, and this is in healthcare).

Asking for a raise question
Technically she is my supervisor not a peer. She makes 5x my salary just is not my boss anymore
Thanks that's what I've been working on is pulling all the salary info From all different sources.

Re: Asking for a raise question
this is just my opinion, but I think based on how you described her position, she has a superior position, she's your mentor and not your actual boss who will make the decision on the raise, I think you can talk to her to get her advice.
if she makes 5x as much as you and has been in the field for 30 years I'm sure she has experience asking for a raise herself.
I would ask her for her advice on asking for a raise without bringing up specific numbers and take it from there.

Yes, with the added information, then I would definitely go to her in that situation.

I totally understand the nervousness. It's like, you want your boss to just give it to you, not have to ask for it. It's totally awkward. I had one boss who just gave them to me every year and now my boss doesn't bring it up at all. So, I had to bring it up for the past few years. It's very uncomfortable if you ask me.

Re: Asking for a raise question
of course you're nervous! that is completely normal. but it's something you have to do in order to get paid what you deserve. I don't think many employers in the private sector just offer raises and more money just because they are feeling generous.
I'm sure you'll get a raise and you'll feel so great afterwards!!!!
