Assisted Hatching?

Is this done a lot? We decided against it. I just handed in my consent forms.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

Actually, I would think about that before deciding against it. Almost all older womens' eggs have "harder" shells and won't grow without Assisted Hatching. Double check with your RE about that if you don't want to take my word for it.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

I know that we do it based on my age. I think they usually recommend it if you are a little older.

Some facilities automatically do it for women over a certain age and some facilities don't. Your best bet is to talk to your doctor.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

I had to pay for it ahead of time in case the embryologist felt we needed it. I didn't though. I am 23 years old.

Was there an override that you signed saying the emryologist could decide if you needed it and perform it later on?

We leave it up to the embryologist...especially being older

My RE's office said they do it for all patients over 35.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

We consented to leaving this decision up to the embryologist.

I think the way they do it at my practice is that if you are over a certain age they do it automatically. If they are doing a FET, they do it automatically. For a fresh transfer at my age (34) it is left up to the discretion of the embryologist based on what they see on the day of the transfer.

You might want to re-think this decision. I don't want you to "shoot yourself in the foot" by refusing the help.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

They didn't give a choice of letting the embryologist decide.

I'm in favor of doing it but DH though there was more of a risk of something going wrong with the egg.

He doesn't know this but I think he was scared and so am I.

I guess I can change my mind about it.

I will ask the nurse when she calls later about it. Of course I would want it done if the shell was too hard and chances of implantation were higher.

I got to see Dr. Davis today for monitoring. I should have asked him right then and there.

Mine does it for all day 3 transfers - and for some day 5 transfers depending on how the shell looks.

Not sure about FETs though... but we do have to pay for it just in case the embryologist feels it is necessary.

If I remember correctly, you must agree to it on the consents, and then the day before retrieval there is a choice on the paperwork whether you want them to do it no matter what or refer to the embryologist's opinion

ok. This is something we have to talk about. The nurse that took my consents told me they don't do it very often. Maybe she's not as knowledgable about this.

Dh is mad at me for even discussing it. He doesn't want deformed kids..he doesn't understand and he thinks that it will lead to abnormalities. Of course I've read everything and he hasn't so he has nothing to go by but his fear.

At my RE's office AH was a standard practice for women over 37. It improves your chances of getting PG by helping the embryo come out of it's shell and attach to your lining. Why did you opt out?

Because DH thinks it will lead to abnormalities. He doesn't know. He just thinks logically when you mess with the egg you will get abnormalities. I was hesitant but I think a call to my doc is in order.

I don't want to mess this up. I want every chance for this to work using all technologies.

My cousin did 4 cycles at Cornell and didn't do it. She was 41. She had success on the 4th try.

I think I have a fight here. God forbid something goes wrong, he will tell me it was because of the AH.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

Is this icsi we are talking about? If so I did it and I have a normal fetus inside me.. According to sonograms and amnio.. I would actually recommend it for anyon over 40..

No, it's the embyrologist actually cracking the shell of the egg to allow the egg to implant. If the shell of the egg is too hard it may not stick.

We are definitely doing ICSI.

Re: Assisted Hatching?

When we had our IVF/PGD consult, I discussed this with the dr. in the practice who is most "specialized" in genetics and he said that assisted hatching is not going to cause an abnormality, I asked specifically b/c we had other questions regarding PGD.

My DH needs to know this. We have to talk to the doc.
