At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
For a while DS would eat every 4 hours. Now suddenly the past week or two he's all over the place. Sometimes he'll barely go the 4 hours but he'll only eat 2oz at a feeding. Other times, he goes over 5 hours between feeds and then he takes a full 4oz. I really dont want to feed on demand but at this rate I dont know what choice I have....he's so inconsistent!
At 2 months old, how many hours in between feedings should he be going??
The other thing is, in a 24 hour period, DS only eats between 13 and 16oz. He's gaining weight, but this just seems like it cant possibly be enough for a 2 month old

If I were you I would feed on demand. I did with Ds, sometimes that would mean he would eat every hour or every 4. It depended on the day.
How many oz per feeding is he getting?

i give him a 4oz bottle but most of the time he's only taking 2oz of it.
ETA: my fear with feeding on demand is that he'll never STTN if he's constantly waking to eat. and i'll be a slave to the bottle

OK, I had a chow hound, and was eating about 5-6oz at 2 months. Honestly I would bulk up his feedings. If you are burping between oz, stop. Let him eat until he stops. The disruption throws them off. Feed him more often and put him on a sched yourself if you dont want to do demand.
Its hard, you will get there. I think (personally) he should def be getting more oz a day.

I dont burp between oz -- i let him go as long as he wants (he ALWAYS stops at 2oz) and then burp. the problem is, after he burps he wont take the bottle back. he completely refuses and starts crying when i try to give him more so, he rarely takes more than 2oz per feeding unless he's starving.

when he starts crying, let him just chill for a few minutes and then go back at it, if you can let him drink w/out stopping to let him burp its probably better....my DD is 2.5 months and has 7-8oz bottles and either we stop once or twice, sometimes never for her to finish the bottle....sometimes she cries when taking bottle back, but i'm persistent and she takes it...if she really just keeps crying, then I stop....otherwise i give her a break, let her chill and look around the room, hold her and then go back at it
its weird because they're growing so fast so their habits change so quickly

how long does a feeding take for you? DS is taking 20 - 30 minutes and only eating 2oz. I've tried waiting a few minutes and then revisiting the bottle, but usually he still wont take it.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
my DD is 8 weeks old and I feed on demand...but it is pretty much every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
She is taking anywhere from 2-4 oz at a time...mostly 4 ounces first thing in the morning for the first 2 feeds and then 3 for every feed after that.
She STTN but we have a routine at night, and we swaddle, so I think that helps us. I think if we didn't swaddle, she might not be STTN....I am afraid to try it just yet!!!
I also don't burp in between ounces, I let her eat until she is done. Also, I found that when she cries after a burp or a stop period, i put the bottle down, change positions a few times, and then feed a few minutes later. She always takes more, even if it is 1/2 oz or an 1 oz.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
maybe you should try a faster nipple? DS was not eating much at first and we upped him to the faster nipple and it made a huge difference. He is 11 weeks now and eating approx. 4-6 ounces at each feeding with one burp in between. He used to get so frustrated with the slower nipples and either cry or fall asleep while eating.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
My daughter was a grazer. She would drink 2oz, then about an hour or so later she would drink another 2oz. She never took more than a 6oz bottle even at a year old when we switched her to milk.
She started doing 5 hours stretches at night at about 6 weeks, but didn't STTN until 8 months.
She never drank a lot either. Maybe 20-24oz, but as long as she was gaining the ped said she was fine.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
Definitely try a faster nipple. My DS is 10 wks this thursday and eats 7-8oz per feeding. It was every 4-5 hours, but now that he's STTN he eats every 3-4 hours. I guess he needs to make up for that middle of the night feeding that he's been skipping? He eats approx 40oz in 24 hrs.
eta: a feeding takes approx 15-20 mins

I definitely think you should try a faster nipple. If it's taking him 20-30 minutes to eat just 2oz, he's probably getting frustrated and just giving up.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
We tried a faster nipple several times but he starts choking. He definately cant handle anything faster. He's using the Playtex Drop-Ins medium flow. But we have to add rice cereal to it. If we dont add enough rice cereal he chokes while he's eating. So, I dont think its the nipple

Your problem could be the rice cereal then...there are very few calories/nutrition in cereal. It just makes the baby feel full. I would talk to your ped about this, I was told no cereal at all until 4/5 months.

Re: At 2 months I still cant figure out his eating schedule - Help!!
My DS is 9 wks and eats every 4 hours, between 5-7 oz per feeding. He takes a while though to finish, usually like 30-40 minutes. I use the Playtex Ventaire bottles and they only come with slow or fast nipples, no in between and he's not ready for the fast ones yet. It must be frustrating for you. I don't do cereal yet but will your DS take it on the spoon vs in the bottle?
