At My Wits End with Waking Early - Need Help
DS is 26 months and has always been a great sleeper. We have done true CIO from time to time (before it was deemed damaging) and he has always gotten back on track. His schedule has been bedtime 7:30 sharp...waking at around 7am with a 1 1/2-2 hour nap around 12:30. Something happened during the holidays...I dont know if it was DH being home for two weeks, him getting out of his routine, eating a lot of junk and sugar or him gettting his 2 year molars in, but his sleep patter was horrible. The past week I have been able to get his bedtime back on track without him screaming his head off when I even mention bedtime and his naps have been fine (albeit shorter --now only an hour). The problem is wake up time is now between 4:30-5:00 AM...this is not working for me. There is nothing I can do to get him back in bed...he is up. He does not want to lie in bed with me and watch tv. He wants his morning sippy of milk and "do his thing" with me. Come 11am he is zonked and wants to nap...which I have been trying to stretch to 11:30 and later with limited success. It should also be noted that come 7:00 he is also zonked and it is a struggle to keep him up until 7:30 so last night I gave up and put him to bed at 7. 5:00am on the dot he woke up. If I do not get up to get him (I put a lock on the outside of his door so he is not wandering the house alone with us sleeping) he bangs his head against the door and I am afraid he will get hurt. He doesnt understand the concept of "its still night night time" and he is too young for the colored night light showing that it is time to get up. I have been giving him motrin before he goes to bed because he had been waking in the middle of the night (has to be molar related) but all I needed to do was go in, hug him and rub his back and he'd go back in his bed. I have been trying that at 5am and it wont work...he senses the difference....any advice? I am feeling very sleep deprived and he is suffering because he is not getting enough sleep. TIA

Re: At My Wits End with Waking Early - Need Help
I got that tot clock (the clock that changes color) because of this. The reviews were amazing and people were calling it a miracle worker.
Well, it threw Sasha off the rails for sleep and we ended up in an even worse situation. We tried EVERYTHING... and finally I dusted off Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and looked at the chapters for her age, and using the tactics recommended and modifying a little we are finally back to STTN. She'll be 3 in less than a month and I am having a baby then too-- we needed to get the sleep sorted ASAP.

Re: At My Wits End with Waking Early - Need Help
My DS has had phases where he started waking up at 5am (usually he's up at 6). I can tell you from our experience, keeping him up later does NOT work for him. He still gets up early, and is going to sleep later and makes the problem worse.
You probably don't want to hear this, but I just adjusted my own sleep schedule to get up with him at 5:00. He eventually worked his way back to the 6am wakeup, but there really is no way I can get this kid back to sleep once he's awake. Generally, he will not sit in his room and play alone - he wants one of us up with him.
