At what age did DC drink from an open cup (no lid)?

I am really curious to know because DS "can" but it's a huge mess. Yet, on one of his feeding evaluation he was "behind" because he was not doing it at 18 months. Now, I know DS has delays but with all the kids we know, met, at GTG, playdate, I NEVER see 18 months kids not drinking from a sippy cup.

The evaluator told me they should be closer to 12 months. Chat Icon

I would say 18 months, she still uses the sippy cup though most of the time, she can use a regular cup and does pretty well with it Chat Icon

DS is 16 months and Ped said to get him drinking from regular cup. He does pretty well with it, but forgets sometimes it has no lid, and may shake it making a mess....we stick with water only in the big boy cup.Chat Icon

Re: At what age did DC drink from an open cup (no lid)?

funny you posted this. my evaluation now left me giving josh cups with no lids.

She had a great theory. Kids back then sat at table and drank open cups...Milk wasn't in cups for them all day to run around with and drink whenever.

She believes this has played a role in the delay of potty training. Parents aren't timing when DC had last liquid so they aren't sitting them on the potty.

so we went open cup.

Since Friday night, we had 4 pees on the potty and 2 poops! go figure!

DS *likes* to drink out of them, but he has no idea what he is doing. He is nearing the 18 month mark. If I give him a cup of water: 90% ends up on his shirt.

But he never liked sippy cups. It's straw cups for juice and water, and bottles for milk.

Re: At what age did DC drink from an open cup (no lid)?

We started Kaitee at around 18 months. She did great with it and has never spilled it. When we are out in public or when she is walking around the house she still uses a sippy cup so she (or Brooke) doesn't spill it.

The only time she has an open cup is when she is at the table because Brooke did spill her cup once so we decided to still give her a sippy for around the house.

Wow, 12 months?!?! I see a lot of 18 month old kids with bottles. At 12 months DS was just getting the hang of the sippy cup. I guess I will have to start dealing with the regular cup mess.

DD is 18 months and has been drinking from Mommy or Daddy's open cup at home only so far. Usually one of us helps her to keep the mess contained.

At our daycare, they have the kids all drinking out of cups with no lids at 2 1/2, no earlier. At home, if she's in her booster seat (strapped in), she has an open cup, but I still give her a sippy cup with a lid if she's playing & when we're in the car.

OK so it's not just us then. We are not the only parents with an 18 month child at the time who had "just" started and he was not mastering since we still have to hold the cup unless we want 95% on the floor on the 1st sip.

Christopher CAN, and has been able to for a long time.

But I don't see us getting rid of the sippy or straw cups any time soon.

Kaitlyn can but I don't usually let her. She drinks about 2 or three sips without a problem then takes the cup and throws it on the floor or dumps it on her tray. So I give her a regular cup only at home in her high chair with about 2-3 sips worth then the rest in the sippy.

Personally I think 12 months is ridiculous to expect that most kids are doing that. I think most people use sippys or straw cups b.c it cuts down on messes.

12 months? I think that's a little ridiculous to expect kids to do that at 12 months. DD really started to get it around 2. She probably was able to do it before but we just didn't really give her the opportunity. Now at 27 months, she is really good with an open cup. But unless she is sitting down drinking, I usually give her a sippy cup.

DD does this at school- if you want to let Noah try- give him those light-weight plastic disposables- that's what they use in Maddie's school and she has an easy time with them.

My DD is 7 months and always wants to drink from a cup...she tries to take mine when I hold her, so I just bought her her own and she takes sips out of it with my help. She wants nothing to do with a sippy cup and I'm good with that! When she is older I hope she will take a cup with a pop up straw for independent times.

Anthony started at 18 months. By 20 months he was able to drink out of an open cup like a pro, but we still use sippy cups.

Caden has been able to drink from a cup for quite awhile. Ive been giving him a cup since before he was a year old.

Generally though I give him a sippy cup.

Same with us and DD....she CAN drink from it...but unsupervised on her own...NO way. That's just asking for trouble!

It's funny you mention this. DD's daycare just started teaching them how to drink from cups this week. DD can do it, but makes a big mess. . . but we're trying.

DS is 27 mths and can drink perfectly from a cup but I dont often allow him. There is no stopping him from spilling it or sticking his fingers or toys in it. Yesterday I gave him a little water in a cup, he drink it nicely was done and tossed the cup into another room. His actions are too unpredictable. Chat Icon

Re: At what age did DC drink from an open cup (no lid)?

DD is 19 and I can say that she's only ever sipped out of a regular cup maybe 3 times ever. I never give her the opportunity...maybe I should start offering, but I never do it.
