At what age did your DC 100% feed themselves...
I'm talking everything - as in they use the spoon and fork 100% and you don't feed them any portion of their meal.
I'm really bad with this - DS can feed himself but he is so messy, it takes forever and he loses interest before he is even 1/2 done. So most of our meals go like this - DS feeds himself for a while and then when 30 min or so has gone by - I take over and feed him the rest. I'm wondering if I need to stop this and get him to practice feeding himself more so he b/c more proficient with it - he is 19 mos.
TIA!

Re: At what age did your DC 100% feed themselves...
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was shortly after she turned a year old that she REFUSED to be fed...so we had to let her feed herself or she wouldn't eat. It's messy and it takes a long time....but I think it's important for them to learn to do it. Now at 22 (almost 23) months, she's been using a fork and a spoon to feed herself for a while...and she's really good at it!

WOW at a year old she was able to feed herself all her meals using a fork and spoon! That is great! Even at DS's 15 mo ped visit he said that kids at that age don't have the focus or discipline to completely feed themselves and get all the healthy nutrients they need.
This is very helpful - thank you for posting - I think I need to start pushing DS on this.

No, she didn't use a fork and spoon at a year old...she used her fingers. She just wouldn't let us feed her with a fork or a spoon anymore! She started with the spoon a few months after, and the fork a few months after that. Now she's a pro though.

Re: At what age did your DC 100% feed themselves...
DS just turned 2 and starting to finally get the hang of the spoon and the fork without making a complete mess. He knows how to scoop with the spoon but usually turns it over before it gets into his mouth I've been sitting with him while he eats and helps him use the spoon and fork...let him hold it but hold his hand and show him how to scoop and than bring it to his mouth without dropping everything. so far so good!

A while now..I would say around 14 months or so. If we are out and it's something messy (like applesauce), I'll feed it to her since I don't like the drips on her clothes.

Re: At what age did your DC 100% feed themselves...
My DD is at the point she rarely likes us to feed her and even grabs the spoon from me - she's 11 months, gets SO messy. I'll let her make her attempts to self feed with the baby spoon at dinner time before a bath. If a bath is not on the agenda then it just takes forever and I often offer her something she can feed herself with fingers... although I'm not finding a lot of dinner things she can self feed at this age. I let her do pieces of American cheese as part of a lunch or dinner, canned peas/carrots (not fresh), cut up banana, or even pieces cut up of Perdue's "short cuts" chicken breasts in original roasted flavor - she likes that a lot. If she gives a hard time at breakfast, I cut up a pancake or often just offer her cherios to eat with a sippy cup of milk. I know cherios is often used as snack for babies, but it is a breakfast food for adults so I figure, it's probably okay. I was curious too when they master the spoon and fork themselves.
