I read somewhere that you shouldn't start until age 3. That before 3 years old, they just really don't get it and they become desensitized to it.

15 months or so and she got it right away
she rarely goes into TO but I think at that age, that is when you need to nip unwanted behavior in the bud
eta - at 22 months, my dd has been in TO maybe 5 times

I also agree that they may not "get it" before 3 but it does exactly what it says...gives mommy and dd a break for a few min...nothing worse then being in each others company aggravated with one another.

she def doesn't get it now. I tried giving her timeout last week , she started laughing hysterically , ran to me an gave me a big hug She thought it was a game. I guess I 'll wait till 2 or so and try again. Not that she needs it much and I hope it stays this way.

I think I started around 16 months. After a month or so, he definitely got it! He is 22 months now, and if he knows he did something wrong, he goes and sits in that corner himself!
ETA DS was a big biter and was biting me multiple times a day. He was also starting to do it at daycare and I needed to try something to help nip this in the bud, cause NO definitely wasn't working. This really helped.

Re: At what age do/did you start giving time outs?
Just this past month...
At 17 months...he definitely gets it.
We started due to 2 specific issues. Both of which have STOPPED since we implimented time outs.
I have a corner in my diningroom that is out of the way..yet I can see him. I sit him down, facing the wall, explain firmly "NO you dont blah blah blah" and walk away. He will sit with his head either againest the wall or in his hands until he is told he can get up.
PS...he is the first one of my children that time out has even worked on...
