At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
I'm just wondering when you can just let the baby sleep until he/she wakes up and is ready to eat. I wake DS up every 2-3 hrs to eat. I don't wake the baby up during the night, I let him tell me when he wants to eat.

I never woke my DD up to eat. She always let me know when she was hungry.

I was told unless the baby was premature or having underweight (or not gaining) issues that you should let them sleep and they will let you know when they want to be feed

Re: At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
I was told you had to wake the baby every 2-3hrs. I felt so guilty today, because I let him sleep for 4hrs before I woke him up. I was so tired from being up so many times last night. I needed some sleep.

Re: At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
My DD wasn't gaining enough weight at first so I would wake her during the day to eat every 3 hours (never at night although she didn't sleep through). I think we stopped around 6 weeks. However, she still woke to eat approximately every 3 - 3.5 hours.

AS long as their eating healthy and gaining weight let a sleeping baby lie. When they're hungry they will wake up and let you know.

Re: At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
Unless the baby is having weight gain issues or doesn't eat enough you really don't need to wake them up. I wouldn't let the baby sleep for more than 4-5 hours more than once during the day. That is what my pediatrician said.

Re: At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
My DD is a little over 2 weeks old.
On several occassions she has slept 5 hours and once almost 6 hours. We woke her up to eat ...and I was completely scared that she was sleeping so long.
I asked the ped at her appt today if I should wake her up to eat and she said no. She can have one long stretch up to 5-5 1/2 hours preferably at night without eating as long as she is gaining weight.

I used to wake Lily every 3 hours to eat because she had her days and n ights mixed up and I was trying to fix it. But we stopped being so strict with it once she started sleeping well at night.... Every baby is different.

I had to make sure DS ate every 3 hours until he reached his birth weight again. This was b/c he ended up in the NICU and lost a lot of weight after he was born. He was back up to his birth weight by his 2 week appointment.

Re: At what point do you stop waking a baby to eat every 2-3 hrs?
For the first month I had to wake DS, but he wasn't eating well and had lost weight. Once he caught up, his doctor said it was fine to let him sleep as long as he liked.
So unless your child is underweight or lost weight from birth, I don't think you need to wake him/her up.

My sons were preemies so I did wake them to eat when they first came home. They had lost weight in the NICU. Once they reached their birth weight again I did not wake them but they still woke every 3-4 hours
