Atheists Sue Over World Trade Center 9/11 Cross: Should Christian Symbol Be Removed?
Taken from Huffington Post A national atheist group has filed a lawsuit to block the inclusion of the famous '9/11 cross' from a memorial at the World Trade Center site.
The cross, a fused steel t-joint which served to gird the towers before they fell, was unearthed from the rubble following the attacks. Unusual for its proportions resembling the Christian cross, it quickly became a symbol of hope for men and women coping with the horror of the day.
It was moved to nearby St. Peter's church in 2006, where it bore a plaque which read: "The Cross at Ground Zero - Founded September 13, 2001; Blessed October 4, 2001; Temporarily Relocated October 15, 2006. Will return to WTC Museum, a sign of comfort for all."
The cross was moved back to the World Trade Center site on July 23, but according to the American Atheists, it should have stayed at St. Peter's.
"The WTC cross has become a Christian icon," the group's president, David Silverman, said in a press release. "It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their god, who couldn't be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross. It's a truly ridiculous assertion."
According to ABC News, Jane Everhart, one of the separate plaintiffs listed in the case, called the cross "an ugly piece of wreckage" that "does not represent anything ... but horror and death."
The group wants equal inclusion of other belief systems - including nonreligious groups - or outright removal of the cross. The 9/11 Memorial Foundation told ABC that other religious artifacts, including a Star of David and a Jewish prayer shawl, will be added the museum ahead of its scheduled opening on September 12, 2011.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. My heart says, how can you take something away from the museum that brought comfort to so many victims, while my head says if it's offensive to some it shouldn't be there.
I guess as a museum it should hold all relevant items to the events that unfolded during that horrific day, so it should stay.
It's a tough call...

Although I believe that every religion should be represented, I can't help but pity this group. Maybe I don't understand their point, but to sue to have it removed is mind bending to me.

I think it comforts more than it offends and I think its selfish to not want it displayed bc you dont agree with it. To me its about the comfort it brings and people need to get over themselves and think about others.

As an atheist, I disagree that this should be a lawsuit. I think that the cross should stay at the memorial. However, I don't think it should say that it provided comfort to all, as that is clearly not a fact.

Re: Atheists Sue Over World Trade Center 9/11 Cross: Should Christian Symbol Be Removed?
I agree, it became a religious symbol instead of keeping it a symbol of hope. People blessed it and prayed at it and it just went overboard. The towers held all religions and the fact we seem to always allow the christian one to be the focal point is completely biased. I think the lawsuit is crossing the line to prove a point. The organization is no better then any other single minded one.

i think the cross should stay but all religions should be represented. It wasnt an attack only towards anyone's religion it was an attack on our country, our citizens, our way of life, etc. All aspects of the people who lost their lives should be represented.

seeing that it isnt a cross and just 2 pieces of steel that happen to break in dimensions similar to that of a cross no I dont think it should be removed. People made it a religious symbol by blessing and praying it. But is it just 2 pieces of steel.

Personally I'd rather see it stay at St. Peter's. it can still give Christians hope from around the corner.
I see no reason why any government-funded memorial should lean toward any religion.
To quote some Huffington Post commenter: “The Vietnam memorial and the Oklahoma City memorial manage to be moving and inspirational without being religious.

Me too. Lawsuits like this make me
This has been a symbol of 9/11 for years. Leave it there...it comforts more people than harms them. People need to get over themselves.

This statement is what is truly ridiculous and, in my eyes, basically discredits them as a serious organization.

For anyone who worked there for one minute of one day, that cross was NOT a religious symbol, but one of HOPE. It was a tiny glimpse of peace amongst an otherwise horrific site. It is a piece of history and belongs on the site as does anything else that will end up in the museum imo.

Re: Atheists Sue Over World Trade Center 9/11 Cross: Should Christian Symbol Be Removed?
As an atheist I see both points.
I am not bothered by the cross being there and see it's value to those who gain spirituality from it.
However it is a slippery slope and unfortunately atheists are one of the few groups that others still verbally abuse without much consequence. Sometimes these cases need to be challenged.

Im a Jew and I think its fine. It doesnt matter to me where faith and hope comes from. Its not up there saying Jesus this and that. It helps healing. Who cares? I would not be signing any petitions even if a Star of David were not there.
The above statement reminds me of many a discussion about the Holocaust. Some felt that a merciful G-d would not have allowed so many Jews (and as many non-Jews) to perish so they chose to no longer believe and lost faith. I look at it this way, though our people are small in number, they did not take all of us. It made us stronger, It helped create Israel and WE WILL NEVER FORGET. We are still fighting and we are not giving up.
Just like America will NEVER FORGET and America is still here. We are alive. We are here. We are still the most powerful (use your own definition of powerful here). We are not a broken nation. I prefer to use this horrific event as an eye-opening experience and strengthen my obligations as an American than to hop up on a bandwagon of whiners. Enough already.

So freedom of religion in our country means there can be no religion? If you don't want to believe in God great...i don't care...but don't make me take a cross down because you don't.

I completely agree with this. It's one thing to object to a religious symbol at a school or a normal public place, but this is a memorial, a place for people to mourn.

I agree with this. Why should all religions be represented? If pieces of the wreckage happen to form a symbol of another religion, then it should be included too. Otherwise, it's just this one symbol, and the atheists should get over it.

Oy vey. I'm not a Christian and I have to say, I don't find anything offensive about the image.
I'd actually never heard about this cross before, but I think it's a lovely idea that people who lost so much on that day can find something inspirational and faith-affirming out of it. Let them have their peace. I'll find my own.
