I'm sorry, a child with autism or not... If the tantrum is getting to the point that it did, then I agree with the airlines. A child a few months ago was kicke doff the plane for having a tantrum...
I know, personally, when I am on a plane with kids who scream or throw tantrums- it drives me nuts. I paid for my ricket just as much as they did. I do have compassion but as the same time, I want some peace and quiet already..
I am a teacher who has children with autism mainstreamed in the class. Same thing applies. If they start to throw a tantrum or have a meltdown to the point where its disrupting the other kids, the teacher takes him out of the classroom.
It is tough and I agree- kids with autism have great challenges- more people should be educated on autism and how it affects a child....
But i still agree with the airline- and yes it is only my opinion...
I agree completely.
As a side note, it really bothers me when people say "autistic child" rather than "child with autism".

I duno, it sounds a little exaggerated. I cant believe that the crew were yelling at 2 year old.
ITA
if the child was crying hysterically and uncontrollably, I am not sure I disagree with the decision to remove them.

As a former flight attendant I understand perfectly the FAA regulations of having a secure cabin prior to taxi and take off. I don't even totally disagree with AA for removing the family. But I can gaurentee that the flight crew was cranky and made a bad situation even worse - BTDT.

As the parent of a 3 year old with Autism, this whole thread makes me so very sad.
There is so much to learn about how to handle the sensory issues of Autism, and it breaks my heart to see everyone assuming that its a "behavioral issue" that the child is throwing tantrums. Flying is uncomfortable for anyone with tight quarters and pressure changes, but for a child with Autism its magnified thousands of times over. Meltdowns are of course to be expected, but I highly suspect that an overworked underinformed flight crew really added to the stress of the whole situation. I bet the mom could have gained some semblence of control if a little compassion had been given.

Re: autistic son and mom kicked off plane
fyi-I learned this from being a teacher:
like someone mentioned before- when referring a child- the disability comes second: child with autism rather than an autistic child...
and yes a child with autism- it is more than a social and behavior issue- there is an entire spectrum- and yes it has to do with neuruologial and sensory issues. more people need to be educated...I larned so much that I never knew before...
it is an intense situation for anyone flying in close quarters like an airplane... I still stand my opinion though...

Re: autistic son and mom kicked off plane
I work on autistic children ( dental hygienist) and all I can say is it is the most difficult thing to do. I feel terrible for the children and the parents but when they act up sometimes there is no turning back- you just have to let them go through it. Being on an airplane is no place for that kind of behavior- special need or not. As a passenger of a plane my safety comes first as well as everyone elses and if the mother cannot control her child then it is not fair to put everyone else in harms way- rules are rules. if the child needs to be sedated in anyway then do it. of course you want everyone to be able to travel but you have to be considerate to ALL passengers as well and RULES . people have compassion but not high up in the air- tension is high already.
edited to say regarding how to say austic child or children of autism I have never heard any parent or medical field state it that way. they say austic child that is probably why so many of us say it that way. doesnt make it right per say just wanted to clarify why.

I work in the teaching field and was told by the autism consultant of the district as well as many others that child of autism is the correct way to state it. the disability comes second. This is what I was told by the "experts" so I am following their knowledge...

Re: autistic son and mom kicked off plane
I can understand why the child was kicked off the plane. BUT I also think this is one of those walk a mile in someone else's shoes type thing. The building I work in has a school for children with Autism and unless you are a parent of a child with Autism, you can never know the feelings behind what happened. These children can not control themselves sometimes and when the pressure in the cabin changes I can only imagine what it did to that poor baby's senses. I think with all the knowledge we have now about Autism and children with special needs in general, that airlines maybe need to have some kind of training for at least one of their staff to deal with these types of situations the correct way. Instead of them making a bad situation worse.

Special needs or not, if a parent can't control her/his child on a plane and the said child is rolling around on the floor of the aisle and screaming uncontrollably preventing the plain from taking off and other passengers from getting to their destination in relative peace--off the plane they go! End of story!

's to both of you. My neice and nephew are dx'd with spectrum disorders. We were once asked to leave the Smith Haven Mall (by security) because my neice had a meltdown and wouldn't get off the floor. That security guard only made the situation worse by his actions which is why I say Strike 2 against AA - First the kid with the peanut allergy and now this. There are too many airlines to fly that will accomodate special needs families (mine included - My DD has life threatening food allergies). I'm sure that flight crew was probably on a 24 hour day - getting screamed at by the pursur to get that plane off the gate. Which I completely understand - But compassion and a little good customer service could have turned this whole situation around. Personally I will never fly AA!

dumb question - do they have flights that are "special needs" friendly?
if they don't - they should
I am a social worker and a few months back I received info on planes that did transport for special needs. Honestly, I think mainly they were referring to wheelchair bound. I have to tell you , it looked quite costly. For those that werent in a situation with being directly related to someone with special needs, you may not know what it feels to be the parent. I have a sister who is special needs and she will most definitely throw a tantrum in a public situation. Maybe not to this extent but she has been known to bite her hand and people have been known to just sit back and watch. I can only imagine how this mother must have felt.

Re: autistic son and mom kicked off plane
I really can't pass judgment either way because i don't know both sides of the story. The mother said the crew only made the situation worse, but we don't know what really happened unless we hear it from a witness. The things the mom said happened, probably did, but I am sure she was upset that her child was out of control and her version of how the crew reacted may be exaggerated.
If the child did not stay in his seat and was rolling around on the floor, then the airline did the right thing. The safety of the child and the other passengers was in jeopardy.

All it takes is one call from the pilot to ATC to say hey listen we have situation on our aircraft - we need to secure the cabin. If the crew can't do it within a resonable amount of time, then yes remove the family.

Yes I have waited many times but since none of us really know what happened, we can't really condemn just the airlines. They are the best judge of the situation at the time. Maybe it's was very busy and it was holding other planes. The bottom line is disability or not, you can't have unsecured passengers before taking off. It does take more than just a few minutes to make it from the gate to the runway so apparently it was not just a few minute issue.
