well if they can afford it and make it--then more power to them. i think we're just not used to hearing about such a high number anymore.
i know my grandmother was 1 of 18 herself.

From what I understand they are a completely self-sufficient and debt free family. They are not a drain on society or their community and they are rather in tact with all of the kids sharing the same parents. Though I am sure they have their share of issues, frankly I dont think it is anyone's business or right to judge how many kids they have.

Oh yeah---definitely. they don't pay a dime in taxes at all--and i'm sure they receive help from the community.
its unreal to think they have that many kids, feed them all on a $2,000 a month budget and are debt free!!!!

The mom has been pregnant for a total of almost 13.5 years . That's if she went a full 9 months with each baby.

If they're not a drain on their community and can fully take care of themselves, more power to em.
Would I be down for having 18 kids? No.
I do however wonder if any of the kids feel like they've been overlooked b/c there are so many of them. I mean how could they possibly offer their children that "one-on-one" time that some kids need?
Ironically, they probably go to a school that has a smaller student/teacher ratio.

my mom said she announced it on the today show & that only one of the kids smiled- the others were like, "come on already"
oh- and i think they home school the kids...
they are pretty religious- the girls never wear pants- only long dresses- and they never cut their hair.

Isn't it possible that they are just a decent G-d and children loving family? Is that so unrealistic? Maybe we are just not used to it. Maybe to THEM, each and every child is a blessing and not a check or tax write-off. They take care of each other.
I was one of 4 with siblings 13, 11 and 8 years older than I was. you can be pretty sure that they assumed many responsibilities in regard to my care and honestly, they do not seem resentful in the least - well maybe changing my poopie diapers wasn't their favorite activity, but they did it. I'll be seeing them later and ask them, but I venture to say that my mother would have raised hell if they didn't change me when she told them to.
In my faith, the reason for marriage is to be fruitful and multiply. If I had the means to have more than 2 children, you can be darn sure I would. But I wouldn't if I had to ask anyone or the government for help.

That's what I got from watching their show on TLC a couple of years ago. This is their family and they don't know differently. The older kids help with the little ones. They all have age appropriate chores. They wanted big giant bedrooms they can all share. It truly looked like one big happy family.
They put a lot of their own labor into building that house. Getting help from parents is no big deal - a lot of people get that who don't have 17 kids.

I completely agree with you. If they're happy and healthy more power to them.
But if they are relying in anyway, shape or form on their community or government so they can care for these kids, well THAT I don't agree with.
DH and I say it all the time, if we could afford it, we'd have a very big family, but unfortunately, that's just not possible financially. Plus, as I said in a PP, I wonder how their children feel about being one of that many siblings.
My husband is 1 of SEVEN kids and I see it in some of his brothers, they KILL for their mother's attention. Now is it b/c they didn't get it when they were kids or just that they're crazy? I have no idea, but I do think alittle of it has to do with the fact that no, their mom could not possibly be at all places at all times. So yeah, there were times when a big event happened (for a kid) that no, their parents were not there to see b/c they were busy doing something else for another sibling that was more important.
I think situations like that can last with a kid and carry over into adulthood.
Having three siblings is one thing... Having 17 other siblings is a completely different story.

Yeah I feel ya there Jenn. I'm 1 of 7 (both parents were married before) and my DH is 1 of 9. The oldest in DH's family is about 36 and the youngest is 9. Six of the kids range from 9-16 -- and when we go over there, they are alllll over me like white on rice, because I'm an outsider and I can be someone new that gives them attention.
I have no idea if its like that for the Duggars and their 17 kids, but it has to come up now and again.
