In the car with my sisters now. Not only did they change the diapers, but they told me about how I got rashes from disposable diapers and how they used a diaper service for me. They are not scarred. Whew!Chat Icon

My DH's mom comes from a family of 14...yes 14 kids (with 55 first cousins) so I can kind of related to this family but personally I think that is totally crazy to have some many children....all I can say is wow!

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

I just think it's sad that the kids need to pencil in months in advance for one on one time with their own mother. It seems like the older kids are basically raising the younger ones, but it's kind of sad that they never get that one on one relationship. Maybe the sibling relationship is as good, but maybe not...

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

Found this article:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - It's a happy Mother's Day for an Arkansas woman -- she's pregnant with her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar, 41, is due on New Year's Day, and the latest addition will join seven sisters and 10 brothers. There are two sets of twins.

"We've had three in January, three in December. Those two months are a busy time for us," she said, laughing.

The Duggars' oldest child, Josh, is 20, and the youngest, Jennifer, is nine months old.

The fast-growing family lives in Tontitown in northwest Arkansas in a 7,000-square-foot home. All the children -- whose names start with the letter J -- are home-schooled.

Duggar has been been pregnant for more than 11 years of her life, and the family is in the process of filming another series for Discovery Health.

The new show looks at life inside the Duggar home, where chores -- or "jurisdictions" -- are assigned to each child. One episode of the new show involves a "jurisdiction swap," where the boys do chores traditionally assigned to the girls, and vice versa, Duggar said.

"The girls swapped jurisdictions, changing tires, working in the garages, mowing the grass," she said. "The boys got to cook supper from start to finish, clean the bathrooms," among other chores.

Duggar said she's six weeks along and the pregnancy is going well. She and her husband, Jim Bob Duggar, said they'll keep having children as long as God wills it.

"The success in a family is first off, a love for God, and secondly, treating each other like you want to be treated," Jim Bob Duggar said. "Our goal is for each one of our children to be best friends, and everybody working together to serve each other makes that happen."

The other Duggar children, in between Joshua and Jennifer, are Jana, 18; John-David, 18; Jill, 16; Jessa, 15; Jinger, 14; Joseph, 13; Josiah, 11; Joy-Anna, 10; Jeremiah, 9; Jedidiah, 9; Jason, 7; James, 6; Justin, 5; Jackson, 3; and Johannah, 2.

___

She's 41 and announces her pregnancy to the entire world at 6 weeks? I guess after 17 births she's not scared of something going wrong.

From what I understand they are a completely self-sufficient and debt free family. They are not a drain on society or their community and they are rather in tact with all of the kids sharing the same parents. Though I am sure they have their share of issues, frankly I dont think it is anyone's business or right to judge how many kids they have.

I think these people are interesting in how they manage everything with so many kids.

I'm honestly waiting for the day when one of the kids rebels against the family values.

ITA.

These people have a strong faith and belief system. They're able to care for and provide for their children (and are probably doing a better job than most than only have a couple of kids), and i think that it's sad that they're being judged for raising the type of family that they want to raise. Especially when the common theme on these boards is supposed to be supporting other mothers, not judging and bringing them down Chat Icon

I agree. I wouldn't do it for anything but they are happy, their kids are healthy and they don't use public funds to support their family. I worry about her uterus too-not really that safe to have 18 deliveries but that's her own risk to take.

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

The only issue I have with it is that the kids don't have socialization with anyone outside the family. They don't do anything outside the home besides church- they have no friends but their siblings. Plus, they don't really have any "free" time, and I don't think the responsibility of raising babies and cooking dinner should be on a child every day. Kids should be allowed to just be kids.

I feel it will be a rude awakening when they get to go off to college. "Real life" isn't only what's being taught/lived in their home.

Other than that- I don't care if she has 50 kids.

Plus, they aren't my kids so I don't really care about how they're raised- just my thoughts. Chat Icon

Isn't it possible that they are just a decent G-d and children loving family? Is that so unrealistic? Maybe we are just not used to it. Maybe to THEM, each and every child is a blessing and not a check or tax write-off. They take care of each other.

I was one of 4 with siblings 13, 11 and 8 years older than I was. you can be pretty sure that they assumed many responsibilities in regard to my care and honestly, they do not seem resentful in the least - well maybe changing my poopie diapers wasn't their favorite activity, but they did it. I'll be seeing them later and ask them, but I venture to say that my mother would have raised hell if they didn't change me when she told them to.

In my faith, the reason for marriage is to be fruitful and multiply. If I had the means to have more than 2 children, you can be darn sure I would. But I wouldn't if I had to ask anyone or the government for help.

With all due respect, being one of 4 and one of 17 is a huge difference. I think it's good to ask the other kids to help out and take responsibilities on, but enough is enough. They don't need this many kids, there is not much chance they can properly pay attention to this many kids, and the wear and tear this is putting on the mother and her body...

I know people used to have lots of kids more often, but don't forget, some of them did not live. Today most children live to adulthood.

my sentiments exactly...

Whenever I hear that she's pregnant again, my first thought is always 'why?!'
There's a part of me that thinks she just really loves either babies or pregnancy, and always needs a baby/pregnancy Chat Icon there's something sort of selfish about this whole scenario... the kids are not benefiting at this point.....

OMG! Enough already. Don't they have enough children. Honestly i feel bad for the ones they have only because there are so many of them. Do they have friends, do they get that one on one time with their parents. If they are ok with it then whatever but seriously?

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

I think that many are comparing this family to our own standards and we choose to live our lives here in the hustle and bustle of NY.

I seriously doubt that they expect all 18 of their children to go to college. I would sooner expect the father to teach the boys his business so they can create businesses of their own. I also am going to be so bold as to say the girls will follow in their mother's footsteps and the cycle will begin again. They too will be the mother of many.

They will HAVE to socialize outside of themselves or they will not be able to safely procreate without risks from inbreeding. Sorry to be crude, but that is the truth.

And for the record, I am very well aware that there is a difference in raising 4 versus 18 kids. Otherwise I'd be a class-A idiot.

Not saying you are an idiot, just saying the responsibilities are bound to be different in families of these sizes.
