And for the record, I am very well aware that there is a difference in raising 4 versus 18 kids. Otherwise I'd be a class-A idiot.

Not saying you are an idiot, just saying the responsibilities are bound to be different in families of these sizes.

You stated your opinion, and I shared mine. No one called you names.

I never accused you of calling me a name.

Whenever I hear that she's pregnant again, my first thought is always 'why?!'
There's a part of me that thinks she just really loves either babies or pregnancy, and always needs a baby/pregnancy Chat Icon there's something sort of selfish about this whole scenario... the kids are not benefiting at this point.....

I think I remember reading that due to their religious beliefs, they don't use birth control - including abstaining as a form of birth control - and believe that God will give them what he believes they can handle, and if he sees fit to send them more children, then they are happy to raise them. Something along those lines. So I don't think it's necessarily that she's trying for more babies to fulfill her own desire.

And about it being selfish... maybe I'm thinking of it differently than you are, but I feel the opposite way. I think that devoting your life to raising children is actually selfless. I doubt either of those parents have much time to think of themselves.

well, that would explain part of it... but seriously, they are NOT the only members of their religious group, and they're obviously reproducing at a much higher rate, since they make news when they conceive....

what I meant by me suspecting they were selfish is that they are conciously deciding to have more children despite the fact that they already have over 15 and each of their children already gets very little personal attention from the parents... and I truly believe they are trying for more children.

I don't care how well your plumbing works, TTC is frequently 'a project'. Couples do their best to time things, the woman props herself up... While some couples get lucky occassionally, and it happens without much planning... I doubt any couple can get THAT lucky THAT frequently, especially when they're in their 40's....

While I may get flamed for this comment, I personally don't believe caring for your own family is being selfless... it's your own flesh and blood... if a couple dedicates their life to running a foster home or a shelter, THAT I would consider selfless. Me being concerned with my mom's health, my unborn child, and my DH's well-being is like being concerned about my own health, IMO. Of course I would do anything for my family, but it doesn't qualify for altruism in my book....

I'm glad to read it's a religious thing rather than what I was suspecting. I was picturing the "need to be needed" & always having a baby to feel that way. That is selfish in my book.

If they're populating the Earth because it's a religious belief, I respect that more. It does remind me of the documentary, Jesus Camp though.

Honestly, I think after these numbers and her age...aren't they pressing their luck a bit? I mean, I know anyone can have a child born with problems, but you'd think after 17, you'd say, "Ok, they are healthy...wth are we trying to prove?" Chat Icon

More power to them! If you want 47 kids, and you're more than capable of providing for them, then why the hell not?

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

Everyone keeps saying that the kids get no attention from the parents... where is this from? I've never heard this before reading it stated on here.

I find this hard to believe if they are home schooled. They are smart children from what I remember seeing on the show, so obviously attention is being given.

Re: Baby # 18 on the way for the Duggars!!

I think my problem with this is that if they are such a religious and wholesome family what are they doing on TV? They may not be on welfare but you know they've had some kind of financial gain from their "TV stardom". What exactly was their reasoning behind thrusting their family into the spotlight? You want to go on TV and brag about having your 18th baby you're asking to be judged.
