Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
Honestly, I do not think that people will drive better b/c they see this sign on board.
And, I just asked my DH, who is an EMT for the FDNY that if he responds (or was taught to) faster to a car that has a baby on board sign in an accident. He said no, they respond to the most injured person first, so in the case of an emergency, they really do not even mean anything...

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
I don't drive any differently when I see a car with those signs. I treat every car on the road as if they either have my own family in there, or they are a potential threat to me (I'm not paranoid, in fact, probably the opposite, but I realize that any car is a potential hazard on the road), so I give every car either courtesy, or a safe distance, depending on how they are driving.
If anything, those signs are a potential hazard. For other drivers, since they may try to get closer to see what it says (not all of those signs just say "Baby on Board"), or if there IS an accident, you'll have a very fast moving, thin, sharp piece of plastic flying around the cabin.
Also, I think the signs are irrelevant, since nobody takes them out if there ISN'T a baby on board. It's only "useful" if it accurately represents the presence of a baby.

OK, people, let me clarify. I definitely phrased this the wrong way. I'm not some wierd person trying to mow down a family, obviously. hopefully, after a few thousand posts, you know me better than that.
I am a very good driver, with an extremely good record. Not to mention I wouldn't harm a fly. I also don't have road rage issues.
BUT, I will maintain that signs like baby on board aggravate me. I AM a vigilant driver. I REFUSE to value the lives in one car over another becuase the family posted a sign. I also don't value a childs life more than an adults. (ie. I don't drive wrecklessly just becuase someone DOESN'T have a baby on board)
It is very presumptuous to me that someone posts a sign like that. Becuase it implies that the lives in that car are more important than the others... or at least so thinks the people in that car.
I am not the only person who thinks that way about those signs.
So to clarify, I don't really drive aggressively around those cars, but I am rather annoyed by the people inside of them. And I don't think people should drive more carefully around my car just becuase my baby is inside. I'd hope the other drivers value my life too.
Any one who thinks differently than me, fine. but I really find it obnoxious that parents think a family should be valued more than a couple of good friends in a car, an elderly couple, or a single person. It's selfish and skewed ethically.
I appreciate the clarification because I truly balked at your initial post - I don't have a baby on board sign, but even still, even with your clarification, I have to admit, I find your perspective on these signs, and your interpretation of why people use them, rather disturbing and sad.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
Posted by wannabemom fine aggressive isn't the word, but I'm quite annoyed by the attitude behind the sign... see below post.
I am BAFFLED that you wouldn't think for one moment while driving that maybe, just maybe I should check if I am cutting this person off, or driving too close to a car with a baby on board sign. While I agree you should be concerned for every human life you are driving around, I would think that a Mother of a baby wouldn't get pi$$ed off that another Mother is trying to do a little extra to protect her child.
I am floored and have knots in my stomach reading your post.
I had mentioned to my mother a few months back that I've noticed people tailgating or cutting me off MORE now that I have a baby in the car. I am a defensive driver, but I am even more aware of drivers when I have my baby in the car. My mother mentioned maybe I should put one of those signs up. I didn't bc of crazies and predators, but now I am truly glad I didn't, because of people that wouldn't care my child is in the car, and continue to act the way they are.
We got cut off (person was trying to make a right hand turn from left lane and didn't see our car-ran us off the road). After I realized what happend, the first words out of my mouth in anger were "THERE'S A BABY IN THE CAR!!!!!" with my hands flailing wildly (DH was driving). I, along with every other parent on this board would give their life for their child-but I don't want it taken by you!!!!! Stop thinking that these people with signs are putting them up just to pi$$ you off so you'll 'behave', and start realizing that they are trying to make you BACK OFF!!! Even if saves the life of just one person, even if that child is not in the car, perhaps a child will not have to grow up without his parent. If only people that 'think like you' would get this concept, the roads just might be a little safer.

I'm not sure if the baby on board signs serve the save purpose as the "Tot Finder" stickers that you put on your childs window on a home - But I always thought it was more to alert paramedics etc... forbid you were ever in an accident...
(As a side note- I'm kind of about the tot-finder stickers, because of predators ), although I do understand their purpose....
Wow you pointed things out that I have never thought about, but are very good points !!

Hopefully just by this post, more people will be aware of them now. The sign is a 'caution' sign (yellow), so that is why it is meant to make people drive more carefully.

OK, I am completely blown away by that poster....but to the OP......I have a bumper sticker in my back windshield that says: "DO YOU FOLLOW JESUS THIS CLOSE?"
I kid you not -- I have ALOT LESS tailgaters!! Down here in NC, tailgaters and aggressive driving is the norm, so every little bit helps.....
I need to get me one of these!

I have to admit I don't really think about it when I see them but I am usually careful since my son is in my car while I am driving. I don't think people look at them and drive differently around you.

I was just reading this thread and wasn't going to respond because most of the girls wrote was I was thinking.
Are you serious?? The OP posted a thread about baby signs. Explain to ALL OF US, especially the OP how THIS topic revived the post of your son saying "god bless you" at 10 weeks?

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
I don't think the signs have the same effect that they did years ago when they first came out.
I was a safe driver before-but since having DD I became EXTREMELY aware of my surroundings and what other drivers are doing. I remember for the first few months of her life how scared I was just going just a few miles with her in the car.
All I can do is just take it upon myself to be more careful and do everything I can to protect my DD.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
I'm just going to answer the OP.
I never paid much attention to them before I had a child of my own.
Now, I do notice and pay attention to them, but I was a pretty careful driver even before DS came along.
I find driving very stressful as a mom. Between driving safely, dealing with a potential meltdown in the back seat and controlling my foul language every time some dumba$$ on the road cuts me off, honks a nansecond after a light changes, etc., etc., I am usually ready for a drink by the time I get home at night.
If I thought it would help, I'd plaster them all over my car. But then, I think people would think I was a freak.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
Just realized I never responded to the question. My window shade from BRU has the BoB symbol printed on it. It was between that and a Spongebob picture. I found the BoB pic less obnoxious, so voila- I am now expecting others to part like the red sea and let me and my offspring rule the road.
Had I decided to go for the Spongebob design, I would not have put a separate sign in the window because: I don't think anyone cares about my baby being on board. It's just one more thing cluttering up my sight line + something that might become a projectile in the event of an accident.
I WILL say that I always just saw them as a kitschy item from the 80s.

They have WHALE stickers for that purpose. I don't think a baby on board sign is intended for that.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
this post is funny...
i don't have kids but i'll admit that i get really po'ed when someone is driving like a turtle in the *left lane*, with a baby on board sign and then when i go around them i don't see any kids in the car - initially i figure, oh wow, they must be a parent with a child (hence the sign) and they are nervous to drive the speed limit - so i just go around and pass them....but then when i pass the car and see no baby i will admit that i get a little annoyed - i guess i feel like having the sign and kids in the car gives you an excuse to drive slow? i don't know why i think that but im just being honest...
but anyway, i hate when people drive slow in the *left lane* whether they have a baby on board sign or not - but if they have the sign AND a baby then i am a lot more understanding if someone is drivng really slow - i will admit that i have a bit of a lead foot when it comes to driving but i think i'll probably end up driving like a snail when i have children in the car....
i also get annoyed when i see people with the baby on board sign who don't know how to drive well - it makes me nervous for the children in the car - i usually notice those people in parking lots - the people who don't notice the stop signs, have trouble getting in a spot - it makes me afraid for the kids in there!

I honestly don't think they work and I agree with the poster who said they thought they were just a kitschy item from the 80's. I always thought they were tongue in cheek and never really thought anyone used them for a purpose.
That being said I really do not even notice them. I drive carefully regardless of who is in the car and it is not for me to decide whose life is more valuable. I will not tailgate you whether you are all adults or a carload of children. Mostly, I do it for the safety of my own passengers but I do not want to see anyone get hurt in an accident, child or not.

I wasn't speaking about the original thread poster. I was speaking about the 'other poster' who responded to this thread who apparently has an issue with "every single post I have made on the parenting board" Sorry if I got my chat anancronyms wrong.
I tried to clarify earlier, apparently to no avail. I am NOT an aggressive driver. there is no need to warn me that a baby is on board becuase I don't tailgate anyway. I don't cut people off.... whether they're parents, single folk, or grandparents. All of these accusations are totally unfounded. I merely am aggravated by the sign, becuase to me, they imply that I do those things normally when I do not.
there's no need to get your stomach in knots by my post. I believe virtually everyone around me on the road has no issue with my driving. I just don't see the need for those signs. You shouldn't have to be warned that passengers are in a vehicle. they're in every vehicle, big or small, and every car one should be cautious around. I love my child with all of my heart... but I equally love my DH and my mother. If anything happened to any of them I would be consumed with immeasurable sadness. This is how I drive... I know the man in the car to the left is someone's husband, and the woman to my right is someone's mom. Doesn't make a difference if a kid is in the car, becuase every car has precious cargo.
I'm beginning to question the driving habits of several posters since they don't seem to get that if you're already a vigilent and cautious driver, you cannot become MORE vigilent... you're already doing your best.
As for the infamous mimickry thread, you're right, of course, I originally posted he said 'words', becuase frankly, as a new mom, I didn't understand the linguistic distinction between mimickry and words with intent. Once explained to me, I corrected myself in that thread and said he mimicked.... which is what he has done. he also was exceptionally early to coo and babble. And very late to roll over.
Ignoring the rest of the posters for a moment, I feel very bad for how I responded to the the original poster to this thread. While I stand by my perspective (becuase unlike common opinion, it's not reckless or terribly uncommon), I DEFINITELY could have been more articulate, and DEFINITELY could have said things with much more tact than I did. I feel very bad for that and would like to appologize. I was rather crass to you and you deserve better.
As for the people who replied to this thread after my clarification, and still chose to attack me and make it sound like I'm driving in the demolition derby with my 9 mo old in the back, I don't know how to respond anymore. I already expalined that I am cautious, have a flawless driving record, and not a road-rager. I'm in no rush to go anywhere, and am a peaceful person. Absolutely no reason to get your stomach in knots, or claim that your sign is an attempt to subdue my reckless habits. I think many of those comments are needlessly dramatic. I just think that sometimes people fail to think of the ways things like signs could be viewed by other people. cheap shot comments (like I'll mow over one of those little neon green men) are unecessary. while I totally understand that my really poorly thoughout original post warranted an LIF scolding, I am sort of about people who keep pounding the original comment when I've clarified, appologized, and said straight-out that I am a prudent driver.
Keep flaming if you will, but it will be on deaf ears. I've said my peace and don't care if you want to continue to bash.

I was the first one to quote you because of your initial post. You came out saying that you were coming out of your way to drive aggressively when you saw the baby sign.
From your explanation above, I see more clearly what you are trying to say. You are not a better driver because you ALREADY are cautious. This is what I think you are trying to say. Obviously this is a complete departure from your initial post.
But your initial post had me completely shocked that a mom would endanger someone because of a sign.
It would be like 'I like Bush", "I like Clinton" and ran someone off the road for not liking a sticker. It's not justified and it's called road rage.
