Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
Posted by Diana1215
Wow!
Ok, first off, I have a Baby on Board sign, and for me, I would hope that the people driving around me would be more cautious knowing that there is a child on board. I know that when I see those signs (or the little people signs on the back of minivans I am always more cautious) Call me naive, but I like to see the good in people that way and think that someone will not ride up my azz BECAUSE I have a Baby On Board sign.
That in no way means that my life, or my sons life is more important than the driver next to me. That is a way for me to hopefully get in the heads of the aggressive drivers (apparently some on this board) to just be slightly more careful around me. I know no one wants to get into an accident with a child in the car - so if I can use that as an extra step to protect my son then I will. I had two sunshades up at one point because I wanted people on BOTH sides of me to be more cautious if possible. Good thing those came down otherwise it looks like I would get run off the road!
I really won't even take the time to go on and comment on the nonsense of getting mad when seeing these signs, or driving MORE aggressively. This type of thinking is what makes the world a scary place to live in honestly.
ITA with everything said here, so there is no reason for me to repost what I was going to say bc this about sums it up.
To the OP - I would have to say before I was a mom, I paid no mind to them. I certainly wasnt more aggressive or aggravated by the cars owner bc of them. Now that I am a mom and my persepective is different, I get the motivation behind them as opposed to before where I just thought they were silly. So yes, now that Im on the "other side" I am more cautious around cars that have the signs in place.

Honestly, I thought those signs were for emergency workers to be aware there is a baby in the car if there is an accident. I never even thought about other drivers regarding it and driving more carefully because of it.
See my post, I asked my DH and he said that they pay NO attention to them when responding to a car accident
Maybe I misread this incorrectly, I took her post to mean that GOD FORBID your DC was ejected out of the car or something horrific that they would know that there may have been a baby on board. Although I guess a car seat would serve the same purpose. Not flaming at all, just saying I had a different take on the other posts meaning.

Honestly, he said they don't pay attention to them unless that is the car that has the patients in need of care, obviously they are going to treat and triage each patient that needs care, but they don't use the sign as a sign to rush there first.

Well....I don't think that they necessary would pay attention ANY signs if patients are ejected from the cars...KWIM? They pay attention to people on the street ejected!!
And he also pointed out that people do have them on their cars when there is no child in the car....so they can't really be searching all over for a baby that is NOT in the car, KWIM? People don't put them on the car JUST when they have their DC in the car

I don't have one on my car, but I feel it's hard to miss the car seat in the back of my car.
II don't think they do much, anyway.

I just asked someone here at work that is also a Fire Chief and he said that they always look for those signs when at an accident scene.

OK--but he goes to a car who has a BOB sticker vs. someone who is an adult in a smashed car? KWIM?
And I am NOT flaming HIM or you...but a fire chief is NOT an EMT who would be giving the care, he supervises the firemen, NOT the EMS, if you asked an EMS captain, you may get another answer
Then again, I am speaking for my DH and what HE told me, not necessary people on the island

I was an EMT for years and whenver I responded to an MVA I never looked for a baby on board sign, it never even crossed my mind. Honestly, if there is a child involved in a crash, the emergency responders will realize it without any kind of sign. Its not like having a sticker in a child's window in case of a fire - it is easy to see who is in a car by walking up to it, but that is not the case with a house.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
well I have the sign and I have a shade on the window saying baby on board . let me tell you an interesting story that happened jast last week. I was driving DD to the park, speed limit in the area was 35 I was driving 35-40(maybe) there was a cop car behind me, they had no sirens or lights on or anything, just 3-4 cops sitting in the car driving. So all of a sudden they start honking at me, first I was startled bc I wasn't sure if I did something wrong and they wanted me to stop and got very worried. but kept driving since they didn't turn the lights on to stop me and /or they didn't order me to stop at some pint just before making a turn I stop at the red light. the cop car ACTUALLY DROVE UP NEXT TO MY CAR, on the driver's side, the driver cop honked at me, rolled the indow down and he says to me: YOU KNOW YOU COULD GO A LITTLE FASTER! and he just drove OFF I was so confused and angry and annoyed I couldn't even say anything I still can't believe it. SOOO NO I do NOT think it makes a difference. BUT I am keeping the sign anyway

Yeah, so they can give you a ticket for going 5 miles over the speed limit.

I just want to point out that my post was intended to show that many people may not even realize that the actual point of the sign, as many of you have stated, is for other drivers to be more cautious around that particular car because of the fact that there may be a child inside. I, for one, was not aware of that purpose and, like I said, I thought it was for ems workers' awareness.
I wasn't trying to be snarky or start a debate or anything.

Mainly becuase I think it's a bit of an insult (sort of like saying that all the cars normally drive erratically with a disregard for others welfare, but becuase there's a baby in the car, I should now take notice and 'behave').
QUOTE]
Why would you be offended that someone put this sign on their own car? Its not directed at you personally. They have no idea you exist, so why the aggression?
But no I dont think people (well most people) pay attention to them. People drive like maniacs and a sign asking them to be cautious isnt going to deter them

I didn't want to touch this post with a 10 foot pole but I have to agree with the above. I worked as a paramedic for years and we NEVER even look for the signs. When you get to the scene of an accident with cars flipped and smashed your goal is to find all the patients and FAST and triage when appropriate.
I will say from working in the field and in the Emergency Room that extra attention is always placed on a pediatric patients, its just in our nature to observe them more carefully.

Considering some lady rear-ended us when my son was 3 months old, and mind you DH was stopped. NO I don't think people actually care about those stickers, which is quite sad to be honest.
And I can't even touch on what that poster said because I'll flip out.... You have your son in a car accident and see blood on his face, and see how you respond to seeing other signs that say "baby on board". Just disgusting.

I thought those signs were just for fun!
And to the poster who is absurdly offended by these signs, please remember that the world has *gasp* other people in it besides yourself, and the signs are not only aimed at YOU but the entire driving population who may not be as "flawless" of a driver as you.

Re: "Baby on Board!" signs...do they really work?
I drive the normal way I drive whether someone has the sign or not. I don't tailgate. I always used my turn signals. I also try to be a conscientious driver.
With that said, you asked for opinions, and from personal experience I feel that people that have those signs on their vehicles are usually horrible drivers themselves. I end up trying to drive away from them because they drive much slower than the flow of traffic.

I would say they do little if anything other than maybe make you more of a target.
Like someone mentioned on page 1 about being skittish about the Tot Finders and child predators, they just scream a- I have kids and might be distracted, so please mug me or b- I have kids, follow me and figure out how to attack my kids!
I have the same view about parking in handi-capped spaces/having the tags/plates for it as well. You are pretty much advertising that you might not be capable of defending yourself.
