Baby Shower
No I wouldn’t go. To be honest I think the mother to be should rethink her plans. Pregnancy is a high risk category. I know every mom wants to experience all the things that moms to be and moms get to but nows not the time. I would go if it were outside socially distanced and could see that but inside hell no. My neighbor just had a drive by baby shower and there was snow on the ground. I saw many people stopping even standing outside with the family and they made it work

I would definitely go. They probably only invited close friends. I don't see any difference between this and sitting in a restaurant.
I just attended a bridal shower at a restaurant. I don't understand how that is deemed safer than someone's home. I was still sitting in close proximity to 8 other women at the table, women switching tables to talk to each other. Breathing the same air. Masks are only required while standing.

Re: Baby Shower
I'm going to add - the chance of you getting it or even being able to transmit it from this one event are slim to none. The vaccine is 95% effective so someone there would have to have it, be contagious, and you would have to be in that unfortunate 5% for which the vaccine fails. I don't really believe that you can transmit it while not actually having it after getting vaccine. It is not something that they KNOW, it is just something they haven't studied yet and so they can't say with certainty that it won't happen. That is scientists being ultra conservative. The chance of this happening is probably extremely unlikely.
We, as a society, need to start using logic. My inlaws have been vaccinated and my whole family has had covid within the past couple months. They still wore double masks when they stopped by for a few minutes last week. The chance of them getting covid from us is ZERO. They were probably more likely to get in a car accident and die on the way to our house. People need to start thinking logically again because I think the entire planet has lost their minds.
And honestly before I get attacked, I don't care if people want to double mask for the rest of their lives as it doesn't affect me but I feel like people use Covid as an excuse for everything. If you don't want to go don't go but if you do, seriously consider the risk you are taking as it is very minimal, and we take minimal risks every day in everything we do.

I’ll use covid as an excuse to see in in-laws in small doses for as long as I can get away with it

This right here that I quoted....this 100% If I could get this printed on a t shirt I would
And yes, your in-laws have more of a chance of dying in a car accident, of a heart attack, of cancer or even a freak, random fall on ice or down the stairs at this point.
The psychosis is fascinating though and should be studied by psychologists and written about in text books the future. Fascinating.

I'm going to say no. But if I'm being honest, I would happily decline a baby shower on a good day pre-covid.

I personally wouldn't attend a 20 person gathering. but I am not vaccinated, and I haven't socialized since Christmas (and that was just my husband, MIL & FIL)
In your case, I think it's ok, if you want to go, but I generally decline baby showers.

For those that say they would not attend, even after knowing she is fully vaccinated, I am just wondering what you think that the risk is? Do you plan on not going to gatherings after you are fully vaccinated? Even Fauci is saying gatherings of vaccinated people are okay and that the CDC is releasing new guidelines for vaccinated people soon.

This is a good friend and colleague so I feel terrible for even contemplating not going. I am fully vaccinated as well but I am not as worried about myself as much as I am about possibly transmitting it.
From what I heard from another girl who was invited, is that it may be like 20 people? TBH - I don't know how it will be kept that small, she has many friends and that would be excluding quite a bit.
I want to ask if masks will be worn, just such an odd thing, but definitely appropriate in this climate.
You are vaccinated, go and enjoy yourself. If you aren't sick, how can you transmit something you don't have? I don't understand that logic. Maybe by contaminated hands? Wash your hands before and after touching commonly shared surfaces.

It might be because (at least as for right now) they’re not saying the vaccine prevents someone from actually getting the virus or from spreading it. What’s being said is that it mitigates symptomatic disease.

Because even though I might be vaccinated, I could still be a spreader. They have no evidence that you can not spread the virus once you are vaccinated. Unless everyone at the party was vaccinated also, I personally would not take the chance, especially with a pregnant woman.

Actually there is a study now that suggests that the viral load is so low that the chance of spreading it after vaccination is highly unlikely. This is why the CDC is going to release new guidelines for vaccinated people this week.

I’m not sure about the study but if their findings “suggest” something then I’m assuming it’d require further studies to be done before making any claims rather than if they actually had concrete data. Same happened at the trials, their limited data suggested certain things but neither Pzifer or Moderna were able to actually claim their vaccines did any of it.

It was a study in Isreal. The reason I said it suggests is because I don't think that the study is peer reviewed yet. But I believe it was enough to get Fauci and the CDC to change the guidelines for fully vaccinated people.
However, let's just use common sense. We know the vaccines are 95% effective so like I said before the chance that you actually even contract covid and then have the ability to pass it on is low. I just think that everyone is forgetting that we take small risks with every thing we do all day long. I took a small risk of getting hit by a car when I walked my kids to the bus stop this morning. I take a small risk sending my kids to school every day that there will be a school shooter. I just feel like people have a NO RISK policy when it comes to covid. Everyone is assuming it is some automatic death sentence when even if you DO get it the chance that you die is .01%.

I plan on resuming normal activity once my DH is fully vaccinated on March 26th. I mean I still go to work daily and my DS goes to school so it is not as though we are living in a bubble, but a baby shower seems like something that isn't worth the risk. I know people will not be wearing masks like they do at my job and at school. I just wouldn't be comfortable in that situation.
Most of my extended family will be fully vaccinated by Easter (with the exception of the kids) so I am hoping we will be able to see them in April as we have to travel and stay with them. I haven't seen most of my family since July.

Oh I see, I’ll see if I can find the study to read it.
That 95% effectiveness applies to the mitigating of symptomatic disease which is what they were able to actually find in their data, not about getting the virus (even if u had it before) or transmitting it to others.
I totally get what u’re saying about risks though, believe me. I def think it’s real but at the same time I understand that living in fear and isolating u and ur family of everything and everyone absolutely is not the answer. I’m mindful of being cautious but I won’t allow fear settle into my senses and rationale to look into things. Just like the question about this baby shower, I wouldn’t have a problem going, how would this be any different than going to eat at a restaurant? So I totally understand what u’re saying.

I am fully vaccinated and I would consider attending an indoor gathering where most other people are vaccinated although probably not a baby shower just quite yet.
I read the Israel study as well and was quite happy to hear it although not surprised. It makes sense - you aren't coughing, the virus is physically in your system for less time, etc. People freaked out when they first heard there was no evidence that the vaccine stopped the spread but that was because they weren't specifically testing for that at the time. It was more important to test for the symptoms. Now that's done and they can move on to test for spread.
I think an indoor, at home baby shower right now is irresponsible - unless it's small and everyone's vaccinated but I highly doubt that's what's happening. I'm not willing to participate in what could end up being a superspreader event with a pregnant woman even if I personally am not going to be affected. No thanks.
We are SO close. Most adults who want it (that's another issue that I don't have time or will to get into) should have the vaccine by the summer, plus by then we can at least have outdoor events. I could see everyone losing patience if the scientists tossed their hands up about the vaccine and we weren't getting one as we speak. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel and if people can just hang in there a little longer we can do things the right way.
I'm living this myself right now. DS's birthday is early April. The family party will wait until the summer. He gets it. Everyone gets it. It's not a big deal.
On the other hand, DH's grandfather is 101. We are seeing him relatively soon in a small group because he is 101 and we might never see him again even without Covid.

Baby Shower
I wouldn’t go even if I was vaccinated for 2 reasons. I hate any sort of shower in the best of times. 2- I think any gathering is irresponsible still so I would not be a part of it.
