Baby's Sex and 12 week sono UPDATE
How accurate is a sex determination at a 12 week sono? I had mine yesterday (12w 5d) and the sono tech said not to go out and buy anything, but she was pretty sure we're having a boy. With DD she said she couldn't tell at the 12 week sono. It certainly did look like boy parts this time though.
Thoughts?
ETA: The sono tech did say that she wouldn't have said a word if she wasn't pretty sure, and pointed to the boy parts. She won't truly confirm until our 20 week sono, but I was curious what your thoughts were.
UPDATE: Had my Level II today at 20w 5d and I am indeed having a boy! So I guess the answer is yes.....at 12w 5d with an experienced sono tech, they can tell the sex

Sorry, I don't have any insight for you. My sono tech refused to even speculate at my 13 week sono. Once I had my level II at 20 weeks, she was confirmed a !

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
I believe the earliest they can determine it is at 15 weeks...but my Dr wouldn't guess until my Level II at 18 weeks

No. They can determine by 11-12 weeks, but it isn't always clear until later.
My OB told me they could try to see at the 12 week appointment, but the tech wouldn.t

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
Under the right conditions, a very experienced tech could be correct at 12 weeks. But I would not bet on it...

I think its much easier to tell if its a boy due to the "nature" of the part. lol If she said she was pretty sure I would trust her. I wouldn't buy anything major just yet though... I would wait for the confirmation. XOXOXO BOTB

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
My doc said guesses shouldnt be made at 12 weeks because at that time, boy parts can look like girl parts and vice versa. He said that is the primary time that when guesses are made, they are wrong. I know a few people who were told boy at 12 weeks and it turned out to be a girl. My doc said you can determine with certainty at 16 weeks.
That said, at 14 weeks, we had a tech guess girl, and she was right.

Actually not true. Boy genitals and girl genitals start out exactly the same way. What becomes the penis in a boy becomes the clitoris on a girl. So at that time 12w, it has to do with the angle of the part they are seeing to know if it's going to become a penis or a clitoris. I read about this thoroughly online, that's why I know only an experienced tech can tell and many will not even venture a guess.

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
Thanks for the info. She is a very experienced tech, and I know from last time when she wouldn't guess that she wouldn't have said if she wasn't fairly sure.
I did google it, and found a few articles that all seem to say that at 11 weeks there is only a 50% accuracy rate, 12 weeks a 75% accuracy rate, and at 13 weeks an 80% accuracy rate. So, I guess it's about 77% likely that we're having a boy
I will update everyone in 2 months at the level II.

This sounds right. Good luck, time will fly until your level 2.

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
We were told we were having a boy with baby #1 at 12 weeks. The tech ended up being right, but told us to not run out and start buying boy things until it was confirmed at the level II. With this baby, I may ask at 12 weeks also.

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
We were told at 12 weeks that he was a boy. I really would have rathered not know anything at that point and regret even asking her because I really doubted it until the Level 2. Of course, next time around I'm sure I'll be asking at the 12 week if they can see the sex

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
I was basically told the same thing at my Ultrascreen...
Mine was done by a perinatalogist. He said dont go out and buy anything but he was pretty sure it was a boy...later on he said that it was a very educated guess and that he had yet to guess wrong....
It's got something to do with the angle of the dangle...

When I was pregnant with my second, at my 12 week the sono tech told the same exact thing. She sounded pretty sure I was having a boy. She confirmed it at 20 weeks.

Go to Ingender.com- they are all about the "nub theory" and you can post your nub pic for them to "guess"

My sono tech said the same thing at 12 weeks about having a boy. Said she was right all the time. Yeah, will be one next week :)

Re: Baby's Sex and 12 week sono
our tech did it at 12 1/2 weeks last week- told us 80-90% sure a boy, then she looks another angle and says - almost 100%-- she told us baby was cooperating VERY well
