Re: Back to school for teaching?
I did it. Just be very aware that tthe job market is TOUGH, unless you are going to teach Math, Science, or a foreign language. However, if you it is your passion, go for it.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I've been teaching for 13 years. Yes, the job market is VERY tough and there are no signs of it getting better. In many districts taxpayers do not want to pay even 3% (cost of living increases). I think it was Smithtown that announced the other day that they will have to lay off more than 100 people... including teachers if the budget doesn't pass.
Keep in mind that districts must off to rehire any laid off teachers... no matter how many years pass... before they open up the job to others.
If you are willing to leave LI there are states that are desperate for teachers and you can get a job immediately.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
Me, me. I gave up my 10 year career to go to school full time. I am starting from scratch and have a long way to go, but that's ok because it's something I've always wanted to do and knowing that I'm working on it helps.
Good luck to you. If I can do it, honestly any one can. I was so afraid to make the change. I hope by the time we're finished with school, the market for teachers on LI will be better.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
Well I would probably only have 2 years of school, so it might still be hard for me to get a job.....

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I did it a few years ago. Went at night while I was a paralegal. I'm now teaching SS in Queens. I think it depends what you are teaching. English and SS on the high school level are hard to find jobs, and elementary I hear is next to impossible. Especially on LI. I did it though and am happy I did. I took a pay cut, but I'm happy. Good luck!

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I switched from accounting to teaching. I am finishing up my first full year of teaching. I teach Math and unfortunately, the job market is still pretty tough! If you can, a bilingual extension or a special education extension will make you 10000x more marketable.
best of luck to you!

i did it too... i got my teaching certificate while doing my Masters in Education... i went to Dowling to do it and finished with in a year, however certifcation requirements have changed since i did it, so im not sure if it would now take longer... i would start researching programs at schools near you... it is SO worth it to do it!!

Re: Back to school for teaching?
Did anyone do this at night? Is it possible to take night classes up until student teaching? If so, which schools do offer it?

Re: Back to school for teaching?
SUNY Old Westbury has a night time program, It could take a little longer because the way they set up their class schedules. The only thing you can not do at night is the student teaching.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I left my very high paying non-education related job to get my masters in eled and could not find a ft position after graduating (only subbing/leaves). i needed something ft. new requirements are pretty dumb too. it's something like if you don't have three years of of teaching experience within a five year period, your certification expires. i'm back in my old field -- making half the salary and pretty bitter. i can't say everyone and their grandparents didn't warn me though. if you are willing to sub for a while to get your foot in the door, it's worth it. it's a matter of who you know or being in the right place at the right time with eled. i worked my *** off in grad school, got a 4.0 and was chosen to represent my grad school for national accreditation (which they said would guarantee me a job along with my education and management experience) and i didn't get a job. other people i graduated with didn't give a crap about getting good grades, really were in the field for the wrong reasons did get jobs for different reasons. 1 had bilingual cert and was fluent in spanish, 2 were in the right place at the right time (subbing/student teaching when someone in the school left), and the others knew someone in the district. If you are going for Business Ed (HS), ppl say it's hard to get jobs, but my BIL got one right away and is very happy. I'm sorry for this long, depressing post, but feel it's important to be upfront about this. GL!

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I went back to school at night. I worked a full-time corporate job during the day and went at night, all summer, etc. You name it I was there for it. Like I said above though, it was the best decision I ever made. As I am ending my first year teaching, I am so happy I made the move.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
Hi
The job market is brutal!!! I worked in a Catholic school, which paid nothing!!Then I was a leave replacement... unable to get a permanent position. I went back to school to become a registered nurse, and got a great job right away.. I did love teaching and at times I do miss it. If your DH is working then you don't have to worry if It takes a little time to get a position.

Re: Back to school for teaching?
I am currently in grad school for School psychology. I am finishing up next year. It was hard for me to quit my job and go to school full time (part-time wasn't an option for my school) but I love it and can't wait to start working in the field!
