Back to school shopping

Curious to see if I am being a pushover...About how much do you spend on back to school clothing/shoes for your school aged kids? I feel like I spent a fortune this year, but I do know that my girls are getting to an age where Target doesn't quite cut it for things beyond basics...$100 sneakers, $60 jeans...is this "normal" for pre-teens/teens? Should I just get used to it?

Re: Back to school shopping

I honestly just buy as we go, so I don't know a total.
I never do a big "back to school" shopping because it's usually 95 degrees for the first month of school so she is wearing her summer clothes.

I will pick up pieces here and there as I see them or she needs them. But she also grows very little so her clothes from last fall will most likely still fit her too, so I just supplement.

I wouldn't be spending $100 for sneakers for her regardless of her age though- I don't spend that on my sneakers and my DH would have a fukin stroke if I tried that for her sneakers that she'll outgrow by next year.

I would never spend $100 for sneakers, $60 for jeans, or any of that. That's crazy to me. I don't even spend that for myself. My daughter is going into 6th, and we pick up things here and then, so I don't add it up. But, it's not that much. She isn't into "labels" though.

Back to school shopping

For my 13yo DD, I'll determine what I think is a reasonable price to spend on something, say, $60 for sneakers. If she wants sneakers beyond that price, she has to pay the difference out of her own money. She has been amassing a large sweatshirt collection for fall, and I said I'll buy you x number of sweatshirts, but beyond that, you have to pay for them.

My dd is very much into labels and fashion all of a sudden...she is going into 6th also. My husband is also into fashion and sneakers, which doesn't help the situation.

That is a good idea..I might have to do that for next year.

As for clothes and shoes...I buy as they need. I don't make a special trip for new clothes especially for the start of school - it's too hot for any new fall clothes.

As for the prices of things...I think that is normal. They care more about what they are wearing now and want Converse instead of Payless.

I always loved back to school shopping (as a kid and as a parent... lol).
My kids are still young, so they don't ask for specific name brands, but if it's reasonable I would get it for them. $60 for jeans, $100 for sneakers... it's not cheap, but on the other hand... they'll live in them all year. It's totally worth it to me.

No offense, but sneakers cost $100 when kids get older. It sucks, but they do.

We buy one quality pair of sneakers a year, and then they both have knock around ones from Payless for the weekends and stuff. We try to see if it can be worked in around a holiday, but now they're older so that doesn't really work.

My son's were $100 this fall, Nikes. Not Jordan's or anything fancy fancy. Since he's starting middle school, my mom got them for him as a gift. But I don't expect that every year.

Beyond that, I don't buy a ton at the beginning of the school year, I got some new t-shirts super cheap. I'll do long sleeved ones in October or whenever it starts to cool off

My sneakers don't cost $100 so why are kids sneakers that much?
Is it because they have to have a certain brand? Or better yet a certain style?
Because I see brands like Nike and Addidas for under $100 too

For "back to school" $0......boys are great!! They wear shorts and t shirts basically all year 'round so I don't buy anything new now. Sometimes I see that when cold winter starts they may grow out of old sweats and I buy as needed. As for sneakers my middle schooler now wants the expensive sneakers. I gave him $50 towards them (they cost $140 and he paid the difference) and I bought him a second pair for $50. You wouldn't believe how he takes care of those $140 sneakers. He will only wear tem to school and cleans them dailyChat Icon . My 10 year old doesn't care as much so wears Under Armour (which still run $50-60).

I just said to DH the other day how I used to love going school shopping. I'd have new corduroys (LOL), sweaters and shoes. I ask my boys if they want/need anything and they say no. They already have an obscene number of t shirts and shorts.

Re: Back to school shopping

Once you get out of kids sizes, sneakers are expenses. We went last week - most of the Nike type sneakers at ****'s were $99 but they had a sale bringing it down to $79 and then I had a coupon for $20 off that, so I was happy. What bothers me is that sneakers don't even last a year - they must not be made like they used to because even name brands tend to rip and I'm back at the store before Spring.

Well - this age is when they start to get into adult sizes, so while YOU don't buy $100 sneakers, other adults do. And he' is a size 6. So it's adult sizes even though he is a kid (11). These particular sneakers seem to be the middle of the road for cost of sneakers. Kids definitely wear more expensive and less expensive ones as well.

I don't think spending $100 on one quality pair of sneakers per year is so bad. Like I said, they both have (my SO's son and mine) Payless knock around (and in the summer) sneakers we get BOGO as well

Right that's what i meant. There are also adults that carry around $1000 purses but I find great quality, stylish bags for a hell of a lot less.
I was just wondering if $100 were a choice or a necessity.
the way you stated it like, well that's how much kid's sneakers cost at a certain age. I can't imagine all sneakers are that much. Even good ones like nikes, etc.
I can't imagine everyone can afford that.
I guess it's about priorities. I am sure some kids want more expensive jeans and less expensive sneakers, etc
Just like I am willing to spend on beauty products and my hair, but want to be cheaper on bags, shoes, and sneakers because I never work out.

Re: Back to school shopping

I spend about $400 each on my older 2 (4th and 3rd graders) and I’m not sure on my younger 2 (4 and 2 YOs) but at least $60 on shoes each. But then I’ll have to supplement more for winter clothes.

I don’t think $100 on sneakers is bad, unless they want 3/4 different pairs of shoes. I probably spent $150 on my DDs shoes but she got sandals, sneakers, and boots, while I spent $90 on my DS but he won’t wear anything else besides sneakers.

Jeans, I’m not sure what’s really typical since my DS won’t wear them and DD wears justice ones and those are so cheaply made that I would never spend $60 on them lol.

It depends what kind of sneaker you get, if you just get fashion sneakers from Nike they are like $60-70, but if you get into Air max and whatever else, they start to get very expensive. I buy my DS $90 air max’s but it saves me in the long run bc of how well made they are. I bought Under Armour $60 shoes that lasted 3 months and looked like a dog chewed them, but his air max’s lasted over 9 months and still look great but he outgrew them.

I think it's a boy thing...having the latest and greatest new sneakers that "drop". I've seen videos about this lol.

We buy Nike typically at Marshalls or TJ Maxx for like $35. My kid has a ton of shoes...I would never spend that much on ONE pair.

Back to school shopping

We spend too much. I know we do but I can't help myself lol. DD is going into 6th and her school is very into brands. Luckily she likes Ambercrombie so most of her wardrobe is from there and we can get some good sales. She has some stuff sprinkled in from other places as well. As far as shoes, she gets cheaper sneakers because she likes to have a few pairs. She does get a pair of Uggs though each year and that's over a $100. I think $100 for good sneakers is more the norm than not.

We went to the Abercrombie outlet the other day, and I ended up with 2 pairs of pants (1 jeans, 1 sweats for gym) 2 wrap dresses, and 3 shirts for $75! My DD does like that store, but I feel like every kid is dressed in the same clothes from there, so I limit it! Not to mention, most of the stuff is super short there, and in 6th grade they have a dress code in our district

Re: Back to school shopping

DS is going to be 10 in a few days. He is definitely into name brand and will only wear nike, under armour etc. I do not do this. My husband does, to an extent but not really. He does get it from school. Back to school shopping was a nightmare. He HAD to have basketball shoes and I was not willing to spend more than 80 (unfortunately, he is an adult size 8 and that brings the price up significantly. Same shoes in kids were 45 dollars less than adults). We settled on a pair of Jordan's for 80. That was after about 6 stores. I do buy him jcpenney xersion brand or target brand and he wants nothing to do with it. He would rather wear the same clothes over and over. So now I just try to be a smart shopper. He only wears shorts pretty much all summer so I get the shorts on a significant sale. Same with t-shirts and hoodies. Otherwise he would only wear one or two outfits every day!

But that's the thing, my kid has one nice pair, one pair that cost under $20 and slides from Kohls that are under armour but still were like $20ish or so. So is it really that different?

I think it's slightly different for the people who have teens in HS. It's one of those "I would never!" until you are actually thereChat Icon

Same as another poster, I don't do a big back to school shop because they continue to wear their summer clothing for the first month. I pick up things for fall here and there and they get clothes for Christmas.
My son is in HS and has a large foot, size 11 mens. I get away pretty cheap with nike and adidas clothes from TJ Maxx, but shoes are the area I get killed on. He isn't asking for Jordans or crazy shoes when they drop but he likes Nike free rn, air max or flyknits. You can't really get them for under $100 in his size. He wears them every single day though so to me its worth the investment. His soccer cleats are always $250+ and he gets those once a year as part of his birthday gift!

This!

If I can find clothes for less than this, so can my kids. Granted, I don't have pre-teens and teens, and I understand that's a different situation. But at that age they can earn money at home with chores over the summer and pay the difference if they want $100 sneakers. Especially since at pre-teen ages their feet are still growing!! Under no circumstances will my kid's wardrobe cost me more than my own.
