I just have to agree to disagree with anyone who feels this way. In my mind, if you are struggling to get by, then you have to think long and hard about what that $20 can purchase instead of a pie. I could feed my family breakfast for 2 weeks with $20. To me, that sacrifice is not greater than the reward.
I agree with this....is the pie worth it if you are short money at the end of the month to feed your kids?
there are lots of things I want- I really want a birkin bag- I have the money- but if I spend it on that I can't pay my estimated quarterly taxes- maybe I can send the IRS a pic of the bag-
It's about understanding the difference between a want and need- it took me a while to learn this- I have been broker then broke- and had to make some tough choices- I learned the hard way about money- but at least I learned
no pie is worth not having food for a few days- organic, gourmet, what ever-
Ah yes, but it's their choice. Us denying them pie won't fix the entitlements programs. If they would rather have pie than something else so be it. Can't regulate the crap out of everything and everyone. That is not what crumbled our financial system.
Actually you can (and should) regulate the crap out of social services to make sure the money goes to the right place. It's a handout, and it's meant to be temporary for the able-bodied, and we're not obligated to let people freely spend public money. Again, this is why I like WIC; it dictates (for example) 2 gallons milk, 2 loaves bread, 4 cans formula, 1 gallon 100% juice, 1 pound meat, 1 bag rice, etc.
I will happily give my taxes to see underprivileged children get proper nutrition. I don't wanna buy pies and cakes.
If it is the same alloted amount, how is it different? They get a set amout per month, what difference really does it make if they get the items you listed vs junk, prepackaged and frozen meals? It costs the same.exact.amount.
Because when you're taking free money from taxpayers, taxpayers have a right to dictate that the money is spent on needs, not wants. It's not that crazy or complicated of an argument.
Wants can come from your own pocket.

My favorite post on this thread. Sums up my feelings so concisely.
Public assistance is to help people survive, to help them get by so nobody is going to bed hungry at night. The government (and taxpayers) should not be responsible for providing "joy" and "treats" to people's lives. Nobody ever died from lack of bakery desserts.

It ain't a tropical vacation. It's pie. Let's not compare it to true luxuries like designer bags, shoes, trips and cars. It's sustenance and if it's not bread, milk or eggs it's not on the approved list?
Most of the adults who receive assistance have paid into the system too at one point. Walk in their shoes.
I could go on and on about how broken the system is and how I am helping to support family members on assistance but it's not regulated to the point that EBT is food shopping with people. If they would rather have pie for a week, so be it. They don't get any more than they get. They have no potential to earn more. They will never ever get out of their situation. They won't have the opportunities able bodied people have. EVER. For them it's not until they get back on their feet. That will never happen.
Most are thankful for the assistance and use it wisely. Most wish they never had to take it. It ain't a free ride as some might think.
I respect your opinion but I'm very close to this situation in many ways. I feel very strongly that these systems are broken but the person who doesn't want to use their assistance on the perceived approved list is not a degenerate who is looking for a handout. For the most part they are good people who had unfortunate circumstances. They can be you and your family too.

The problem is, the bad apples spoil it for everyone. And it's a slippery slope-- sure it's JUST a pie, but it's symbolic of the overall problem of using public assistance to subsidize LUXURIES. It's just a pie, but where do you draw the line after that?
Story about Starbucks accepting EBT cards in Oregon
Again, we may agree to disagree, but I do stand by my opinion: public assistance is designed as a means of getting by, not as a means to indulge in fancy baked goodies or $5 frappuccinos.

We're going to have to leave it. I still see it as food. The fact that you can't buy hot prepared food is a head scratcher. Some people don't have homes and can't prepare food. Hard to regulate food in these instances. To use this example, Starbucks hires homeless people and gets them off the public dole.
I remember years ago my grandmother qualified for assistance. She would get two giant blocks of American cheese. That was her subsidy.
It's a mess for sure.
