Baptism and Two Godfathers? Legal in the eyes of the church?
If you know the definite answer to this, please let me know! We're Catholic, and I think this is frowned upon, but I'm not sure.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Technically, it's not allowed. They will only allow you to list one of them as the godfather on the baptismal certificate. My DD has 2 godmothers. Only one is listed "officially", but both of them stood with us at the ceremony & did everything the godparents would do.

I know one of my friends gave her son, 2 godmothers, no godfathers and it was fine... Are you having a godmother too? Might depend on the actual church/pastor

DD's godparents are my sister and my SIL. The church is fine with it, except only 1 can sign the certificate. They will both stand up at the altar and do everything the other does.

Re: Baptism and Two Godfathers? Legal in the eyes of the church?
Definitely not allowed in the Catholic church. However, since you only need one Godparent ("sponsor"), you can list one, and in your own way, acknowledge the other.
We are doing this with our baby. Our oldest daughter is old enough to be the baby's Godmother, but we have another daughter 18 months younger as well. They are amazing, and the only candidates for Godparents. To have our oldest daughter be Godmother, and someone else be the Godfather just because he's a guy, would be almost an affront to our 2nd oldest. So one will be official, but they know they're the Godparents.
Enforcement on this is new, by the way. It has always been canon law, but in generations past, it was permitted as per each parish.

I am interested in knowing this too. i would like to have 2 godmothers. I don't mind if only one is on the certificate...i had 2 maids of honor and only one is on the certificate. it is only a slip of paper, being there next to my db at the baptism is what is meaningful to me

Re: Baptism and Two Godfathers? Legal in the eyes of the church?
DS has two godmother and no godfathers - my sister who is catholic is the technical godmother and my SIL who is not catholic, is really considered a Christian witness... When we first met with the priest he told us no, but I went to the Monsignor and he was fine with it. He told us our child could have as many Christian witnesses as we like ....
This is what is said in my churches paperwork about baptism....
Every child to be baptized should have one or two catholic godparent, who are at least 16 year old and have received all three sacraments of Christian Initiation: Bap., Eucharist and confirmation. If there are two, one must be male and the other female.
If a non-catholic is asked to serve as a Christian witness, together with a catholic godparent, the non-catholic must be a bap. Christian and is referred to, in the bap. register as a Christian witness
a person who is not baptized may not be a godparent or a Christian witness.
I wanted to add My SIL - the christian witness played the part of the Godfather

Re: Baptism and Two Godfathers? Legal in the eyes of the church?
I just received my baptism information in the mail and it says there must be one godmother and one godfather.
But, I think it may depend on the church.
Sorry not much help!
