Basement remodel

I just wanted to share a process we have gone through over the past few years....

We bought our house in April 2006 and the basement was a disaster. It was basically a cellar with ceiling ranging from 6 ft. to 6 ft. 4in. with columns randomly placed everywhere. We didn't need the room at the time, so we decided to leave it be for a while.

In June 2007 we decided to replace the ancient boiler. It was over 50 years old and had forced hot air "arms" taking up much of the ceiling height in the basement. We switched to baseboard heat using the Burner King and were very happy.

We debated what to do with the basement for the next two years. This year, finding out I was pregnant we decided to undertake a huge project. We hired a contractor to excavate the basement, underpin the foundation, and replace the main support beam of the house, giving us a more "normal" ceiling height (about 7 ft. in most places). We used Paramount Contractors and were very pleased.

Once that was done, my wonderful and talented DH and FIL set out to finish the basement. They insulated, framed, re-insulated, sheetrocked and basically "built" a basement. We had the Burner King return to add a zone of heating, we had a spackler come in to spackle and tape (Russo Taping and Spackling), and a local handiman installed a drop ceiling. After that my DH installed the doors, mouldings, and painted and almost finished the job. We are just waiting for the furniture for the den to arrive now.

I just wanted to share all of the hard work he did, and give those homeowners like me who bought at the high market ideas of how to create space in their homes without selling. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has.

The before pictures are VERY scary so beware! I am so happy with the way it turned out. Enjoy!
