Of course. He's my favorite baseball player of all time.
I'm really surprised that so many people didn't know who he is. He's a NY sports institution and the personalities on that team were very big in 1986.

Absolutely, but I am in my late 30s. IF you grew up in the 80s, you would know who he is. It would be like not knowing who ARod is now.
Agreed.
Although I was 4 at the time. I still feel like almost everyone in NY would be able to name at least a few of the '86 Mets, similar to how even people who don't know baseball know Derek Jeter

See, this is the thing: I honestly don't know what the big deal is about the 86 Mets, so I couldn't tell you anyone that was on the team Did they win the World Series or something that year? I was 9 at the time, but there is/was literally ZERO interest in sports in my house growing up. We didn't watch them, read about them, discuss them with other people... Without the Internet it was very easy not to know or hear about people that you had no interest in as they weren't so in your face like they are these days...

The '86 Mets were HUGE. Yes, they won the championship. They just had this crazy amazing year, and their antics were as newsworthy as their baseball playing. They had a lot of "firsts" in that season. I come from a family of dyed in the wool Mets fans but I feel like the 86 Mets were EVERYWHERE. One of my fb friends posted an Ivory soap commercial Gary Carter was in. They did a lot of events. Some are still in the spotlight. Even if you don't watch him on SNY, you could still see Keith Hernandez in the Just for Men ads, etc.

Oh - I know him! I guess I do know an '86 Met after all I'm going to ask my dh about Gary & the rest of the team tonight...and I'm going to pretend that I already knew why '86 was an important year so that he doesn't disown me

Is it so difficult to understand that some people just don't know or care about the '86 Mets? Is it so mindboggling? I'm honestly that people seem so put off by this.

I just feel like they were ALL over the news at the time, and this is NY, people talk about sports all the time even if you don't follow it.

I really wouldnt expect a lot of people under the age of 30 to know who he was. I know but only because I'm almost 40 and I was a big Mets fan back in their heyday.

I just feel like they were ALL over the news at the time, and this is NY, people talk about sports all the time even if you don't follow it.
But I think it depends on your circle and frame of reference. I was 11 - tv was very very limited in our home (we didn't even have cable until college)- IF sports were on it was generally my father who watched and it was only a rare yankee game or football game. I could have cared less about the mets - besides friends were always yankee fans so IF I knew any of them it would be a yankee player not a Mets player that would spark a recollection. Sports was not a big discussion in our home. News was NOT sports in our home it was more of what was going on in the world (my family didn't read Newsday as they consider it to not be a great paper - they only read the NYT and wall street journal). Just saying this to show you that it shouldn't be surprising if someone hasn't heard of a particular sports player because we all have different backgrounds and frames of reference. Whereas I had friends who were sports fanatics who could name everyone on every yankee team BUT not as much of other current events. I have to agree with the above I don't see it strange or unusual for someone to not know about all of the sports players of any particular team. I'm sure there are probably many famous politicians, musicians or artists that if someone posted on here about dying that many people would say "who?" to as well.
As far as names today -I don't think you can compare 1986 to today - seeing as you can't go online or into your email with out names flashing across your screen in news briefs - but back in 86 unless you watched a lot of TV or watched a lot of sports or sports news (or read about sports news) you might not have the name recognition that most players have today.

Yes, I had a crush on him and Lenny Dykstra when I was 8 lol. And I remember the 86 World Series, even though my family isn't huge sports fans.
Oh...I met Lenny Dykstra at a sport store in probably, 1990, 1991.

And I am not a big sports fan either and I just know names from TV, newspaper, radio, any media.

Yes, but I was 16 at the time & at the time I was a die-hard Mets fan; knew all their stats, numbers; went to 1-2 games a week.
Then later when I worked there I'd see him daily.

love Gary Carter! He was my favorite NY Met! He brought so much spirit to the team. I too am surprised at the number of people who didn't know who he was. Growing up with a Dad who was a major sports fan, we didn't really have a choice but to become big sports fans!

Don't be so surprised
I lived in NY in 86 and never heard of him before the other day. My dad never put on a ballgame so I never knew any baseball players. It's not everyone's cup of tea, no need to judge.
