Absolutely, but I am in my late 30s. IF you grew up in the 80s, you would know who he is. It would be like not knowing who ARod is now.
I was 16 in 86 and had no idea who he was. I had to google him. AND I clearly remember that game, still had no idea,.

Sure did! My dad is a Mets fan and my DH is a huge Mets fan.
I was in 6th grade for the 86 World Series and my teacher was a HUGE sports fan. Definitley remember that.

I'm in my late 30s and had no clue who he was. I was not interested in that World Series.
But I know Rick Cerone, Dave Winfeld, Reggie Jackson, Willie Randolph, Bucky Dent, Ricky Henderson, Lou Pinella, Goose Gossage,

Why is there so much judgement against those of us who just don't care about sports? DH is a baseball fan so I've gotten more into it, but growing up my dad didn't watch so I didn't either.

I don't think anyone is judging those who don't like sports. I think some people are just surprised that a lot of people don't know who he was. I don't watch basketball at all and therefore would not judge those who dont but if someone said they never heard Kobe Bryant I'd be surprised by that.

Yes, I knew who he was. I'm not a much of a baseball fan but I have always heard good things about him as a player and person.

Yes- I grew up in the 80s and my great-grandma was a huge Met fan. She loved all the guys- Gary, Mookie, Keith. If she hadn't passed seeing Darryl Strawberry become a Yankee would have killed her .

Yes, but our house was all mets fans. Went to a lot of games in the mid-late 80's.
I definitely get that people didn't know how he was. And I don't see anything wrong with it.

Of course. He's my favorite baseball player of all time.
I'm really surprised that so many people didn't know who he is. He's a NY sports institution and the personalities on that team were very big in 1986.
Don't be so surprised
I lived in NY in 86 and never heard of him before the other day. My dad never put on a ballgame so I never knew any baseball players. It's not everyone's cup of tea, no need to judge.
Being surprised is not the same as judging. Who is judging?

Re: bc i am so curious....did u know who gary carter was..
I used to be a Mets fan when I was younger. The 1986 win was HUGE for me as a kid. I switched over to the Yankees when I realized how much my Dad loved Mattingly and I wanted to be like him. So I know ALL the players from that year. Gary Carter though was ALWAYS my FAVORITE. It really broke my heart to hear of his passing.

The huge difference between the 80s sports players and current ones, are that current players are out in the public eye in so many ways other than the actual game. I never watch sports, but I know about a lot of player's names from CNN, reality TV, TMZ, etc, etc. I know of ARod, but have no idea what team he plays for. Same goes for Kobe Bryant. I think people recognize the NAMES of more players now, but don't really know who the ATHLETES are, just the public persona.

Yeah I see what you mean. I guess I just assumed more people would know who he was since we are in NY. I really don't see any judgement in this thread at all either but maybe that's just me. At this point I'm more surprised that this has turned into a 5 page debate than anything else!
