bedtime for 12 year olds?

Before covid, my soon to be 12 year olds bedtime was 8:30 during the school week (he'd go in his room and read for a bit) and then 9 on the weekends. He's always been a kid to need a lot of sleep.

Since covid, i'm wondering if we should let him stay up later. Although he would just want to play video games the whole time. Which i'm not a huge fan of but... times are tough. lol.

so what time does your 12 year old go to bed now?

Re: bedtime for 12 year olds?

If yes happy and getting enough sleep then keep it going. My son will be 11 soon. Before coronavirus he went to bed around 8:30. Now he goes around 9. I have an 8 yr old too on the same bedtime schedule.
On weekends he goes around 10. Sometimes later if we’re doing a late movie night.
He does have friends that goes to sleep later. My son doesn’t complain and he needs his sleep. He also likes to get up early.
I know before all this at friends sleepovers it was probably more 11 - midnight.
If I let him stay up later he’d be on his phone and he can’t sleep well with electronics before bed.

Pre covid, my kids went to be d at 9:30. Now it is closer to 10 on the weekends, I still make them get up at 8:20 am to sign in. They have on line classes at 8:30 or 9 am depending upon the day.

Re: bedtime for 12 year olds?

Before this DD who is 9 went to bed 845.
She had to be up 645 and at the bus stop at 730. (Nuts for elementary I know!)
Now...free for all.
BUT if you can keep their bed time somewhat consistent I would. Because her sleep cycle is a mess now and it's causing major problems.
If you have gotten this far with the sane bed time I'd keep it.
Maybe a flex of 15 to 30 min and maybe more leeway on weekends.
But don't go down the rat hole I did.
It's hard to climb out of!

Re: bedtime for 12 year olds?

My son is 11 and his bedtime was also around 8:30 on the weekdays. However, since his days start a little later and he isn’t actually commuting to school, his bedtime is 9:30 sometimes 10.

On the weekends it’s whenever he falls asleep or sometimes I will tell him to go to bed at 12 or 1.

Re: bedtime for 12 year olds?

My 11 year old went to bed by 9/9:30. Now he generally goes to bed by 10. He’s still up around 6 most days, but he was never someone who needed a lot of sleep.

My 10 year old used to go to sleep at 9-9:30 but it's now more like 10 (last night he was reading until 11 but he's still asleep now at 8:20).

We need to work on getting him back to sleep earlier since in September his bus comes around 7.

Yikes we are in the minority I guess. My 6th grader used to go to bed around 9:30-10 up at 7.

Now she has no set class schedule. She just does her work when she gets up. She is usually up till midnight and waking up 10:30-11am.

My daughter will sleep until 10 if I let her. Her school work can be done whenever so it was never an issue that she had to be up for a class lesson or anything
But since she's been having issues sleeping at night, I've been trying to wake her by 830 on school days and 930 on the weekends to try to get her to be tired earlier in the evenings.
It's been a mess!

My DS can’t do that since his school starts at 8:30. Each of his classes take attendance and most of the teachers will do a zoom meeting. So he has to get up at 7:30 everyday.

We don't have a schedule in our district. They just do the work when they can. Sometimes mine does "night school" if we are doing stuff during the day.

I would try to keep it as consistent as possible. I am a firm believer in routine. My kids are younger, but I still keep them on the same sleep schedule... and they need it.... so do I!

Re: bedtime for 12 year olds?

Before Covid my 11yo was going to bet between 9 and 930. Since we have been trapped at home it has been more like 10 or 11. We usually watch a movie of some sort that his younger siblings can't watch

This is their new routine Chat Icon

I'm not in a rush to wake them up because it gives me some time in the morning to work from home before having them in the mix.
