bedtime for infant

Currently we really don't have a 'routine' for bedtime for DS. He will be one month old this Friday..>WOW. now, usually he has a bottle around 7ish...stays awake and plays for about 8ish, and then starts to fall asleep. We just put him in the PNP in the living room since DH and I are still up and about. He usually ends up sleeping until I pick him up to put him in his basinette. Then he keeps on fussing until I feed him...that is usually about 11 give or take. After that bottle, he's out until about 6:30 / 7ish... Since I don't work I usually go back to bed with him until about 10... then we start our day.

But I want to get him on a routine now.... and then in the next two weeks or so I want to get him to sleep in his crib, b/c otherwise I'm never going to want him to leave our room LOL.

Now, what is a good time to put him to bed? I hear some say 8pm... but will he really sleep from 8pm till the morning..? Should I just put him in his basinette at 8 when he's getting sleepy... and then IF he wakes up at 11ish I just feed him and then put him back in his basineete? Or, do you think he may not even wake up if he's not being picked up for that 11 feeding?

Just wondering how everyone else went about this. When (and IF) I get a job again, I want to make sure that he's in a tight routine so i can acutally sleep through the night...at least mostly LOL.

I think that that is what you should do. It's good to put them in when they are sleepy, helps with self-soothing. And who knows if he'll wake up at 11ish. But if he does, just feed him and put him back to bed. I'd say it sounds like you are getting lots of sleep considering you have a 1 month old, lucky!! I started my son's bedtime routine somewhere between 4-6 weeks and he's a great sleeper now. Putting my DS in the crib was no biggie, he made a smooth transition.

Thanks! I was sorta answering my own questions as I was writing it... LOL. He sleeps pretty well... I really shouldn't complain...but HIS issue is once he is awake, it's hard to get him back to sleep. This Friday I am going to try going in my glider in his room... and playing his baby beethoven cd to start his routine. I will do that at 8 each night... and that way when he converts to the crib it'lol hopefully make my life easier.... LOL. DH wants too keep him in our room till he's 6 months!! Chat Icon LOL. Not going to happen LOL.

First of all.. HOLY COW!!!You are a lucky woman with your Ds sleeping like that!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

he probably has a difficult time falling back to sleep b/c of the whole night/daytime confusion. My DS took a long time to at first..after a few months it got better. Make sure it is bright during the day and really dark at night. At night..dont talk to him or play when feeding him. He needs to know it's sleepy time not play time. KWIM.

Re: bedtime for infant

My DS had the exact same routine as yours. He would sleep downstairs in the PNP or swing from like 8pm - 11pm and then I would bring him upstairs..finally I started just putting him to bed in his crib upstairs at 8pm and then that's how we started the whole routine / STTN thing! Chat Icon

Re: bedtime for infant

Thanks ladies!! I guess I am pretty lucky... (even with hearing him crying in the other room right now LOL) .... See, I was also weak, and gave in to having him sleep with me...in my bed... on my chest LOL. I just love the feeling too much, and just this one night turned into a full week. So now he's not as happy to be left alone.... I may need to find soemthing that he likes enough to replace me HA. Other then that, if he's really sleeping... he's good. I just havn't been able to put him down when he's still awake.... he'll just wake right up and start to cry. I'm hoping that changes soon... b/c he doesn't even want Daddy at that point. I'll let you know how it goes Friday. Hey, I may even start it tonight... he doesn't NEED to be a month old in order to really put him to bed LOL

Oh yes... I tottally KWYM... when he wakes up late for food...I bearly say a word.. just go through the routine of warming his bottle and feeding him... I am going to need to get black-out blinds for his room soon tho...we have them in our bedroom, but not in his room yet. I'll have to get on that...the mini blinds in there no do NO justice....when it's sunny out...it's bright in there LOL
