Been reading about 1 year old bloodwork. Am I the only one who....
....didn't have a clue that we needed to get this done? My ped has never mentioned it. We're going for his 1 yr well visit in October. I'm assuming they're going to fill me in on this, right? I need an RX for it. Does every practice send you for bloodwork, or is it possible that mine doesn't push it?

Re: Been reading about 1 year old bloodwork. Am I the only one who....
The bloodwork for DS 1 year appt was done with a finger prick in the office. It kind of sucked b/c she kept squeezing to get enough blood out while DS screamed bloody-murder!!
We just had his 2 year visit and I think they were going to do the same thing - but we wanted to get some allergy testing done so they did a blood draw from his arm (in the office as well.) Still sucked. But at least it was over quicker.
If you are unsure, I'd give them a call.

I'm thinking maybe they'll bring it up at his well visit. Oh geeze, I can't believe they got enough from a finger prick. Poor baby! I hope they'll just do a regular blood test.

Re: Been reading about 1 year old bloodwork. Am I the only one who....
I didn’t need a script for mine.
I didn’t need to do them at all here in Texas actually. I asked because she was exposed in NY and they agreed. Otherwise it would not have been necessary.
*shrug*
I didn't *know* ahead of time.. just enough threads at the time here sort of clued me in.
ETA: AJ's was done by a prick on her foot. She didnt care. She played with her toes during the whole time. haha Then she got bored and tried to play with the nurses hair.

I never got it done for my DD. She is 2.5 years old. That probably sounds bad but I just don't find it necessary to traumatize her. My friend's child came out slightly high for lead and they don't really do anything about it.

The 2 big things are lead and anemia. Lead - not really a big issue anymore, but untreated anemia can have severe consequences.

IMO, its an important test.
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/heart/ida.html
"The effects of IDA will depend on the duration and severity of the anemia. If left untreated, it may lead to behavioral or learning problems. These may not be reversible, even with later iron supplementation."
IDA - Iron Deficiency Anemia
The bloodwork is mainly done for this.

Thank you for providing a link!
I am surprised how many people just blow off this blood work (here and IRL) like it's no big deal.

No, no, no- I don't mean that I don't think it's important. I will definitely be getting DS bloodwork done. I just had never heard of it before. It's never came up at any of his pee visits. But thank you for posting that link either way!

If it weren't for LIF I wouldn't have had a clue about it prior to DS' 1-yr well visit. His ped never mentioned it... we found out DS was getting the finger prick when we were in the exam room and the nurse came in ready to do it!

I wasn't implying you didn't think it was, I was just trying to say that I think all peds do it because it is an important test.

Same...I finally took him the week he turned 3...which was 2 weeks before his 3year well visit. I too didnt want to traumatize him and at 3yo it was a breeze, he literally sat and watched as tehy took his blood.
ETA: They gave me a script at his 1 year appt which I didnt do...Then they gave me a new one at his 2 year appt....which I did just after he turned 3. The script is good for 1 year from the date written. I didnt get anything at his 3 year visit.

Re: Been reading about 1 year old bloodwork. Am I the only one who....
Mine did it right there in the office at his 1 year well visit.. I don't remember if they mentioned it to me but I did know about it that it was going to happen.. I personally think any blood work is a good thing. Better to know than to not know.. With that said I don't think it would matter if the child was 1 or 16 a needle is a needle.. I (at 35) am still petrified and cry at needles, especially blood work..
