Before Care/ After Care cost?
Is it normal for a school age before care and after care program located at an elementary school to cost nearly $600 a month?
I thought I was going to be saving money once DD started K, however it appears it will cost me as much as her pre-school tuition! I would need an hour and a half of before care and after care... and also I learned that this program also doesn't watch them on half days...

Before Care/ After Care cost?
I live near Albany so my rates will probably be less than LI. I pay $110 per week for before and aftercare. So that is at least $440 a month, but it is usually a little more because most months are more than 4 weeks.

Before Care/ After Care cost?
We are moving and one of the first things I check is availability of after school programs in each district we consider. They have all ranged from $500-$700 per month. Not on LI but still in the tri state area.

If your district uses SCOPE which is an outside company, it's very expensive. I work in a district that uses Scope but I live in a different district that does their own before and after care and I pay a quarter of that. It's unfair for sure.

Before Care/ After Care cost?
I pay $550 for before and after care in my school district. It is run through the JCC. They do provide breakfast and snacks. They do run the program on half days but only morning care in that case.

Yes, my district uses SCOPE. Wish they would run their own program!

Before Care/ After Care cost?
I pay $416 a month for before and after care. (5 days a week) My district has their own program. For k and 1st grade it is a little bit more. My district also watches them on half days (for a nominal fee)

I think ours is in line with that for 5x a week.
Wait until you price out summer camps. There is no savings having a school aged child.

Re: Before Care/ After Care cost?
Yes! That's what it costs.
2 other things to mention...
-Just because you only need an hour and a half, doesn't mean you have to take only an hour and a half. I've been going home first to throw in a laundry or gone food shopping before pickup. I don't keep DC there the entire time (until 6) but a few extra minutes doesn't hurt. BTW, my DC LOVES her program and gets mad when I pick her up early. DC considers it like a "playdate."
-When we left daycare, one of the teachers said to me...you don't save money by having a school age child. It costs you the same or more...the money is just spent in other places ie camp, uniforms, clubs, after school activities, etc. SO TRUE

Before Care/ After Care cost?
we live in NJ and our school has one thats run by the YMCA- its at the school, though. I think its along those same price lines- $400-$500 a month. i'm a SAHM so we don't need it, but i did look into it for a couple days a week, because my kids were actually saying they wanted to stay there with some of their school friends HAHA But yeah, that plus all the half days on random wednesdays for teacher inservice meetings, plus snow days or other holiday days off-- they hardly every have a full week of school. So the care costs can definitely add up!!! plus, 8/10 weeks of summer camp in the summer, too! and all the activities and clubs and classes they start to get into at that age....Definitely don't save any money over daycare!!

Re: Before Care/ After Care cost?
We are in NJ and this is similar to the price our school charges. It is $550. When we first moved here is was $425 but they raised minimum wage so the price increased, and next year will be more.
I think you just end up moving money around like another poster said. So you don’t pay for daycare, but camp, clothing, sneakers, and extra curricular activities all add up.

Omg summer camp.. I hate paying for it and mine is a cheaper option than most pay.
I’m in Nj and my son goes to catholic school. Before and aftercare cost $500 for the 5 days. That’s drop off at 7:30 and pick up at 6pm.

That's where I send my DD for summer camp actually, because its $350 a week vs. thousands of more dollars... but unfortunately not many places except for some home daycares are listed w/ working with my school district with aftercare. So I am pretty much stuck with SCOPE.

Before Care/ After Care cost?
Our district has an offsite location that many kids go to and it's $235 a month for both before and after care. That starts at 6:30am until school starts, and runs until 7pm after school. The district itself uses Scope and it's like $10 a day I want to say

I don’t know how old your kids are but is that a daycare? Do you kids go there after school? I think a lot of parents are stuck using the provided before and aftercare services because they need a way to transport the kids to the place after school. So some settle for what’s in house like i do or use the services that provide buses, which I’m guessing is what Scope is. But I could be wrong.
The money you save on daycare comes back to bite you in the tooshy if both parents work full time and hold late hours.

That’s really good.
I’m fortunate that we don’t have to use the entire service at my sons school because my DH gets out between 2 & 3, so the days he gets off at 3, my son will he in there for an hour. And I only use before care when I have early meetings. $500+ a month would suck especially since we pay tuition. I’m in NJ and my sister is looking at public schools for my niece. She said the before / aftercare hours aren’t great and some don’t even offer it.

She is in First grade and the bus takes her from the elementary school to kiddie academy and I pick her up there. There is aftercare at the school but since my 5 yr old is in preK at Kiddie Academy it’s more feasible to do this rather running around to 2 different places to pickup. My district allows you to arrange bus transportation to wherever as long as it’s in the district.

SCOPE is located at the elementary school so there is no transportation involved. It's just a very pricey program!
