BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
My DD is 3 weeks old. I started pumping and giving her occassional bottles (actually, DH gives them to her). He is willing to do middle of the night feeings and I would love to have him do this.
The problem is that I wake up so engorged if she ate more than 4 hours before the next feeding that I need to either feed her or pump. So it hasn't made sense for him to feed her in the middle of the night, since I have to get up to relieve myself.
For those of you whose DH do bottles in the middle of the night...how do you physically handle the time going by without getting rid of the milk that has built up?

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
I'm in the same boat ar you!! I end up doing all the night feedings because of this!! Lately my engorged boobies will wake me up before my DS is even up and ready to eat!

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
When I wake up in the AM my boobs hurt and they leak... it has gotten better since the earlier weeks. I deal with it to not have to get out of bed!
After I feed her for the last time at night, I pump. When I don't, it's worse in the AM. After I feed her first thing, I pump again. That's when I really get my supply for the bottles.

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
IMO you have to pump during every feeding. Even if DH is doing the feeding. It sucks, but that's the only way you can build your supply up to keep enough milk for her. Otherwise your body will think she's skipping that feeding and eventually you will not be able to pump enough milk.

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
At only 3 weeks you are still building your supply. I would keep up with the night feedings for now. I used a co-sleeper and it help tremendously. They were right next to me so I didn't even have to get out of bed

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
You have to either pump or feed every 3-4 hours or you will leak. You could train your body to produce no milk during that one feeding though, however, you will completely decrease your milk supply by doing this.

ITA. You may eventually be able to skip a night feeding, but if you don't BF or pump at all at night, it could end up affecting your supply.

I agree with these girls.......until your DC is ready to sleep longer stretches at night & doesn't need that feeding....you need that BM to feed DC......pump or just BF at that feeding.

Thank you. When she starts to sleep through the night, what happens to that pumping/feedind session? Will it be painful for me?

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
DD is JUST starting to sleep through the night (fingers crossed, knock on wood). I've been having to wake at about 4:30 to pump a little because I'm waking up in pain. I only pump a little bit (rather than pump out both breasts) so my body will regulate my supply and stop producing so much overnight.

Thank you. Seems so unfair...just when she's sleeping through the night, you're still up pumping at 4:30 in the morning! How long do you think you'll have to continue waking up to pump?

Well- she's only just starting to sleep longer. If she continues this trend- it should only take a few days for my supply to regulate. But you're right- it IS unfair. Especially when just as I'm about to go back to sleep, my older DD wakes up for the day at 5am (which is her latest way of torturing me).

Like the others said above, you are still building your supply til about 8 weeks, so it helps so much to either feed or pump every feeding.
Once your baby begins to sleep through the night your body will regulate itself. It took me about a week for my breasts to stop hurting so much when he slept through the night. I just wore breastpads and dealt with the leaking and pain when I woke up. If I happened to wake up before him in the morning, I pumped then to relieve my breasts. (There is still plenty of milk in the breast in case they wake up right after the pumping session.)

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
I agree with everyone on here. At 3 weeks your body is still learning what to supply so I would not skip a feeding. I preferred to feed DD at night because it was easier than pumping, cleaning parts and storing milk. When I was really tired and needed more sleep, when DD would wake up my husband would go change her and bring her to me, I'd b/f, then he'd take her back and put her to sleep. That way I could stay in bed and not have to fully wake up.

If she starts to sleep through the night, then you will be able to skip that time without BF or without pumping because she won't need that feeding. It may hurt a few days, but it will hopefully be gradual and not all of a sudden like my DS did to me!! He went from max of 5 hours to 10 hours within 2 days!! I had to pump once around 4am for about a week or so. I would pump 20 minutes until I was sure it seemed he would continue to sleep. After a week I cut it to 5 minutes to just relieve myslef whenever I woke in pain. That was just a few days more.

That is why I just fed in the middle of the night, it was so much easier than pumping!

Re: BF Question re: middle of the night feeding
I don't pump at night when I skip feedings. I just deal with it to benefit from the additional sleep!! Sometimes I'll pump after the first morning feeding though. I don't do this every night, about 2 times a week.
