BFing moms - Cereal question
The ped said at Ryan's 4 month well visit to introduce cereal. We are waiting until 6 months.
But I just wanted to know do you mix with breast milk or water? Ped said we could use either.
If you do breast milk - what is the ratio of Cereal to Breast Milk?

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I don't BF, but the formula ratio to start with, is 4:1
So I mix 1 tablespoon of rice cereal w/ 4 tbsp of formula
I would think it's the same for BM

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I used BM initially then realized it was a waste of liquid gold if DD didn't eat the cereal, so I switched to water. I use 2 measuring tablespoons of water to each measuring tablespoon of cereal.

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I used BM. I don't know what the ratio is...I would hand express into the bowl first, then add a little cereal, mix...keep adding cereal to you get the consistancy you want.
before you nurse in the AM...pull that boob out and drain right into the bowl.
I kept it a secret for a long time from DH...then one morning he walked in on me he said at that point he's seen it all.

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I started with one TBS of cereal and then just added the amount of BM that made the cereal the consistency that Charlotte liked. Never more than 1oz of BM (I've never use anything other than BM).

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I used BM for the first week or so then used water.
In the beginning it was really runny 4 liquid:1 cereal after the first week I started making it thicker and got to about a 1:1 ratio over the course of 2 weeks.

Same here. Xander is now up to 2 1/2 TBS of cereal which I use about 2 TBS of BM to mix with until I get the right consistency.

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
I use 2 oz of formula to 4 tablespoons of cereal. When I used BM, it was about the same but I found that if I made it the night before, it would be more liquidy in the morning so I woudl have to add more cereal to thicken it. If you are just starting, I would use less cereal or more BM. The reccomendation is 4TBSP of BM to 1 TBSP or cereal but I found that too be way too soupy so I thickened it a bit but not as thick as I do it now. HTH!

Re: BFing moms - Cereal question
Ryan eats 3-4 TBSP of cereal and I mix it with about 1.5-2 oz of BM. So I guess for the consistency he likes, it's 1oz BM to 2 TBSP cereal
