BFing Moms of Milk Allergic/Sensitive Kids
What are you eating? I feel like everything easy has milk in it. I am trying to read labels but I feel like they all have milk too. Sometimes I feel like he can tolerate milk in the ingredients and other times I think nope, that was a mistake.

I drank Naked drinks for breakfast. Usually Blue Machine. I also baked a lot. I would make pancakes, waffles and muffins using substitutes(rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, bananas for eggs).
rice milk in cereal.
salads for lunch.
pasta
soups
I think giving up milk is doable, since you have rice milk. Giving up soy is a different ballgame. ITs in everything.
the plus...I did lose a lot of weight.

I am also losing a lot of weight on the dairy free train. It is hard-especially with desserts!
Almond milk is a great substitute, IMO better than rice or soy because it has a creamy consistency. My husband made linguini with clam sauce using that and it came out great. We use olive oil or smart balance spread instead of butter. I use non dairy creamer in my coffee. Lots of fruit and veggies. Make rice with chicken stock instead of adding butter(or use Smart balance) I was told even the tiniest little bit of dairy can cause tiny cuts on their intestines so I avoid it all. Some of the common names for dairy are Whey, casein, lecithin. The good thing is most packaged foods npw have ellergen info on them so you don't have to read the whole list just look at the alllergy info. Also you should give it at least a month on this diet before doing a challenge as it takes a while for their insides to heal

just wanted to add....a HUGE benefit to nursing your milk allergy baby is that you get a crash course in what is out there that you can eat.
Pretty soon, you will have to give table foods...you will know exactly what to do rather then feeling it out then.

I'm hoping he's not really allergic. He doesn't have the allergy signs but I notice a difference in his sleep and this tiny little patch of eczema between his eyes. His reflux is also better when I am good about being dairy free.
I guess I'll get some milk subsititue. I don't drink or eat soy products. I am one of those people that likes the real thing or nothing but I suppose I can bake with milk subsititute.
Janice-why bananas for eggs? Was he egg allergic too?
Can either of you share some recipes or websites for recipes you made that have come out good. TIA!

My son was very sensitive to it, but not allergic. So I drank soy milk, used soy margarine, etc. But foods that had trace amounts of milk didn't bother him.

so things like his pancakes (at like 8 mos old) I would use banana.

Have you dropped off his diaper for testing?
Josh just needed to be held all the time or cried.
Had patchy skin and big pimples.
Never vomited or anything
had diaper tested and blood was found in stool.

What I find so strange is that Madelyn was EBF and I drank milk/ate dairy. she never reacted to it- no eczema, fussiness or vomitting, she gained weight well. It wasn't until we actually gave her something dairy that we found we had a problem. she has a pretty severe allergy to dairy as well.
Crazy, huh?

No they haven't asked for a diaper. The GI basically says to lay off dairy anyway b/c of the reflux. I guess if he doesn't get better they'll take further steps.
Hudson is the same way with the crying and needing to be held. Nurses all the time and really only sleeps at night. I think I've been in denial about the dairy thing since with Miranda it didn't make a bit of difference but with him even after just a day of no dairy he is less fussy.

DD didn't have reflux or vomiting while I nursed but had very bad eczema and that is when I brought her to the allergist.
I stayed away from cooking with any dairy and I didn't have obvious dairy like milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc. She was able to tolerate products that had milk in them though. She is still the same way. She can have cookies and cake with egg and milk (she has an egg allergy too) and foods processed with it but I can't give it to her straight. When I do she breaks out in hives, her lip swells and depending how much she got ahold of she will vomit until the proteins are out of system.
I also do not like any type of soy or rice milk products and I just stayed away from them. The hardest thing was not having milk in my coffee so I switched to Coffee Mate which is a non-dairy creamer.
The first 2 weeks were the hardest and I have to tell you I really wanted to give up but, I had made it 6 months EBF and didn't want to stop now.

I had no problems with goat and sheep's milk cheese and neither does DD.

Whole Foods has tons of stuff. You can usually ask someone there to help you too.
Breakfast: miniwheats w/rice milk oatmeal honey sunshine (kashi) pancakes (from whole foods - made w/ rice milk and banana plain lenders bagels with smart balance LIGHT (the regular has whey) Omelettes with turkey and rice cheese..make sure the rice cheese is also casein free (it will say Vegan on top)
Lunch:
gotta find bread (i think arnolds 100% stoneground is safe) (i'm from upstate so i get a bread you can't get around here) wholefoods turkey bologna applegate farms hot dogs (big apple) salads potato salad macaroni salad turkey mayo
Dinner:
pasta w/sauce (easy to find sauce w/out cheese). I add asparagus, diced tomatoes, and homemade meatballs. The meatballs: take any recipe and just make sure to get dairy free bread crumbs (ex. Jason brand) and leave out the parm cheese if it calls for it.
any meat baked or sauteed w/ a little oil w/ steamed veggies and rice (I use the smart balance light for everything.
Meatloaf (yum). again just get the dairy free bread crumbs
mashed potatoes w/ rice milk, scallions, garlic and smart balance light
annies 123 chreese macaroni and cheese ( i add peas)
hamburgers w/ dairy free buns (easy to find in any grocery store)
Hmmm... that's all i can think of for now.
FM me if you need any help. This is my 2nd time around. Nursed DD for 2 years dairy and soy free and so far 7 months w/ DS

ETA: don't believe if something says it is Dairy Free...need to check the labels for whey or casein. Certain things like cool whip and coffee creamers will say dairy free and still have casein. frustrating
