Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
We had trouble latching in the beginning (now she LOVES nursing) so I pumped the first week to keep the milk flowing.

I guess after a week. I was so scared to do it - that big contraption! It was fine though, good luck!

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I personally would not pump unless you need to be away from your baby or you're having a problem with your supply and need the stimulation to increase it. Introducing a bottle this early on will very likely cause nipple confusion issues. Your body makes the perfect amount of milk, signaled by your baby's sucking. The extra stimulation from pumping could cause an oversupply, resulting in a forceful letdown and a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Hope that helps!

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I think it depends on how the baby is latching and your long term plans. My DD latched great from the beginning so I didnt start pumping till 6 weeks, to start to freeze milk for when I returned to work. If you have supply or latch issues it could be helpful to start early to maintain and build your supply. If you are pumping to get an extra bottle for DH, I would try to wait till at least 3-4 weeks to let your supply become more established, but if it is just occassionally it wouldnt be detrimental.

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I heard you are not supposed to pump until about 6 weeks also. It could damage your supply. I guess a few times wouldn't hurt.

I never knew this! I thought starting after a week, was starting late! Thanks.

I disagree. I think they try to scare you with the whole "nipple confusion" thing just to keep you Bfing long enough to really get the hang of it and not give up. I started pumping after 2 weeks and gave occasional bottles during that time because I went back to work part time after 3 weeks. My son never had nipple confusion. He nursed great and took the bottle, just the same.

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I pumped for the first time in the hospital with DD- we had to return to the hospital because she was jaundiced and dehydrated. I nursed her and gave her the pumped milk at the pediatrician's recommendation. I was glad to have the nurses there to help me the first time I pumped.
My ped also said that pumping would help my supply, which it did. I also never had any problems with nipple confusion- she went back and forth between breast and bottle easily.
You can also freeze any milk you pump now to be used later after nursing's established, if you are not comfortable with the idea of bottles yet.

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I pumped the first week because I was engorged. My DD wasn't nursing enough to keep up with my milk supply. There's really nothing to be afraid of with pumping. It's easy and painless.
I forgot to mention that I froze my milk though. I didn't give her bottles until she was 10 weeks old.

i pumped right from the beginning because we had trouble latching and needed to build and maintain my supply. we went back to the hospital for jaundice too, but i didn't give him the milk i pumped. i just saved it.

I had the same situation. Jaundice....no fun. They have great pumps in the hospital though!

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
I started at 6 weeks here and there just to get the hang of it. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, not that great but not horrible either. I started occasional bottles at 8 weeks and my DS was fine with the bottle. Its a personal choice and one you should feel comfortable with.

I pumped as soon as I got home from the hospital. I had no latching problems just prefered to pump and measure.

Re: BF'ing moms, when did you start pumping?
In the hospital. My milk came in, I was so engorged. Baby had jaundice. So I pumped and fed him that way. He did not suffer from any nipple confusion.
