Big News! (a little long - sorry)
No, I'm NOT pregnant. People always think that first!
I've decided - after an exhausting and very disappointing experience with jobs/careers - to go back to school for my teaching degree.
All of my life I have always had a problem with having the desire to do something. I never really knew what I wanted to do. Then, after HS, I did some College thinking I would figure it out...never did. Then, I met Vinny and we got engaged - then married. During that time I was trying to find something (job wise) that I really enjoyed - it was awful... one CRAP job after the next.
So, recently, I was in the midst of starting something new - a job I thought would be good and, for a lot of reasons, it just didn't work out. I think this happened for a reason. I realized this right away - after only two weeks during the training/introductory period of the job. So, there I was again - at square one.
I did a lot of talking with DH and my family - and I've decided to go back to school. I'm going to get my Business Degree from Empire College (I'm enrolling tomorrow) and then I'm going to get my Master's in Home Economics Education (a specialty program) they offer at Queen's College.
Then, I'll teach Home Ec. which is not what it used to be when I went to school - they have replaced a lot of the sewing and baking with real life issues like sex education, nutrition, health related issues, etc. They even have a section on deciding what you want to be when you grow up AND things like how to balance a checkbook! I think this is SO important for young people to learn and Health (when I went to school they called it Health lol) was one of the most important subjects, IMO, b/c it was stuff these kids will USE in real life.
I'm SO happy, SO excited and I feel so enthusiastic about all that I will have to do and eventually be able to accomplish in the years ahead! I finally have the DESIRE to do something!!!
Girls - thank you for reading!!!! It means so much to me!!! I know my posts are always so long-winded but it was SO hard to make this one short!! I apologize for that!
BUT - I need some words of wisdom, advice, tips, etc - anything from the older, wiser women on this site who have been through what I am about to embark on! Teachers, anyone!
...or just a good luck, pat on the back will do the trick!

Re: Big News! (a little long - sorry)
Congratulations!!! It really IS awesome when you finally feel like you have a sense of direction. I was pretty much int he same boat (got my Bachelors in psych- Pointless!!), and went back to school after our Wedding. It is hard, and overwhleming at times, but its the best thing that you can do for yourself. You deserve to achieve great things, and anything less than that would be a disservice to yourself.
The time will go faster than you think!!! When i decided to go back and register for classes, it was 3 years until i would be done- now it's 5 months.
Best of Luck!!

Congrats!!
Where is Empire College??
If this is what she is referring to, Empire State College has an awesome program where you do most of the work at home, and just meet with your advisors every so often. They make you do papers mostly and you will get a regular college degree without having to sit in classes like most traditional schools. You even get to "design" your courses with your advisor. So let's say you HATE history but must take two history courses, you can choose something you are interested in such as "Women's Rights Movement", etc.
In LI Empire State College runs an office out of Suny Old Westbury. I am sure they have other locations but that is the main one I know of.

yes!
you can take classes online (actually sit in an organized online class while at home), do classes on a home-based level meaning you meet with teachers at certain times, get your assignments and do the work and get credits or actually take physical classes at different campuses - it is empire college but they will rent out classrooms at various schools on the island like suffolk, old westbury, stony brook, etc.
i will do mostly home-based b/c that is easiest with my schedule since i will have to work full-time but a few classes i will need to take on campus - mostly the summer accelerated ones.
it's really a wonderful program - my brother did it, that is how i found out about it - and he loved it, just got his bachelor's - he said the advisors are very helpful and the whole system was very simple in terms of how it was set up - scheduling classes, getting a student loan, etc. when i took classes at suffolk it was such a mess and no one wanted to help - so i'm excited that they will be good to work with.

yep!
thanks!
ETA: my brother loved this system b/c he is a police officer and works full-time - also, he has a son so his schedule is crazy and always changing - this allowed him to do his work in his spare time, whenever that was, at his leisure.
also, he was able to take classes and do more of what he was really interested in b/c the advisors really give you personal attention and help you find things that work for YOU. he said they are the BEST!
they have an office right in the same building as the DMV in hauppauge! (as well as others, of course)

Re: Big News! (a little long - sorry)
That sounds great, I'm happy for you.
I don't know how old you are but I had a similar change of career around age 26. I finally figured out the things I enjoyed and was good at and went back to school to increase my chances of entering my chosen field.
The advice I can give you is don't let discouragement deter you from reaching your goal. There were so many days that I felt extremely pressured to keep up the pace I was going at. But I finished school and found a good job to get me started.
It's exciting and it sounds great right now but I wish for you the diligence and patience to do your best and get your schooling completed!
Good luck!

Re: Big News! (a little long - sorry)
i am so happy you have the courage to make such a big, positive change in your life!
i went through a similar situation several years ago which involved leaving law school, which was a huge blow to my parents (and my wallet) because i was there on a full scholarship. in the end, though, i went back to school and i am VERY happy with the career i have now (i truly feel it's a career, not just a job).
i wish you all the best!!
