Birth Cert. & SSN info
Hey all,
A lot of post got me thinking. When do you sign up for all this??? How far in advance and where do you get the info?

I believe the hospital fills out the paperwork for you, and you receive them a couple of weeks after the birth.

I don't even think you can, you would need so much other information, like the hospital name etc...who knows if you would actually make it to the hospital you planned on.
I'd be curious to find out how in the world people did it before hand.

Someone at the hospital brought me the paperwork to fill out. It had to be done before we were discharged.

It is done at the hospital. There is no way to get either of these things before the baby is born.
You can also take the paperwork home and do it yourself but I don't get that oprion. It seems easier to just have the hospital do it.

We had a couple of days to complete it. No matter what it had to be done by discharge. I don't know if it included SS#, I was pretty out of it when they handed it to my hubby. I ended up filling it out but it was really basic info. *shrug*
Its been a month now and I haven't seen anything.

In Stony Brook, they give you the Birth Certificate forms to fill out before you are discharged and you have the option of having them get a SSN for the baby or not. I just got Lindsay's SSN in the mail the other day and she is 2 weeks old...pretty quick!!

I don't think you can do anything until the baby is born. My Dr. gave me a package from lenox hill with the forms in it but nothing can be "turned in" until the baby comes.

PSA- Whatever you do... make sure that you ask that the hospital submits the paperwork for the baby's SS#. My coworker didn't and had to go to SS 3 times b/c he didn't have the proper documentation!!  You have to prove the baby's identity which is not as easy as it sounds when the baby is new and doesn't have id!! Doing it thru the hospital is faster and much less of a headache!!

The hospital did it for us. I got his SS card in 2 weeks and his birth certificate about a week or two after that.

DH and I had to fill out a packet of paperwork after Daniel was born. We just had to hand it in before we left and they will mail everything to us in a few weeks.

You don't have to ask the hospital anything...they automatically give you the paperwork to fill out after the baby is born and submit all information for the baby's birth certificate and SS...I don't know what kind of hospital your friend gave birth in but that is the standard procedure in all hospitals. Some hospitals give you the admittance papers in advance but they do not contain information for BC nor SS...
