Birthday parties

My DS is at DDI with six kids in his class. I am wondering if I should invite them to his party. I am also wondering the same thing about his twin sister and her preschool class (she's in a typical preschool). We've always had family only at the parties, but now that they both have classmates, I am wondering if I should invite them. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Birthday parties

I would definitely invite them! In my experience, lots of time DD and her friends don't get invited (sad, but true). Also, it's a great way to connect with other parents of special needs kids!

Re: Birthday parties

Also, any suggestions for a good party would be helpful. I am thinking maybe a bouncer party. DS is PDD NOS and doesn't do that great with sitting for long periods of time.

We're doing a 3rd bday party at Pump It Up and invited her class- the responses have been wonderful. Only 1 child not coming and really all so happy to be invited. So far such a good experience. I think, like me, parents with kids with socialization, attention, sensory or whatever they may be issues just happy to be included.

DD is also PDD-NOS. We've done backyard parties, bouncer parties, sports parties and a pool party.

As a teacher... I just want you to know that when my students with autism were invited to birthday parties it meant the world to their parents. For some of them they had never been invited and it is such a typical kid thing that the parents felt it was a huge milestone.

My Gym in Stony Brook does a really nice party, and they have experience with children that have special needs (they have a class there).

Re: Birthday parties

I have twins. One has Autisma nd the other does not.
I invite kids from BOTH Matthew and Christopher's class. But I only write the one name on the invitation. so this way I didnt want them to feel obligated to buy a gift for both.

It was a success.

Re: Birthday parties

Thanks so much for the feedback. I am definitely going to invite his class and her class.

Diane great idea about just putting one name on the card...I wouldn't want people to feel obligated to get two gifts either.
