Birthday Party - cake or no cake (help us decide)

My daughter's first birthday is coming up and we're planning on having a party at a restaurant. My wife wants to get a birthday cake, but I don't think its a good idea, here are my reasons:
1. My daughter is allergic to eggs, so she can't eat the cake anyway (although the guests can eat it, and a cake with a candle is a good photo op)
2. The venue is a huge buffet, and having our own cake is a waste.
Here is the menu from the place (I kind of wish it wasn't our party, so I would have time to enjoy the food):

CREPE STATION - Bananas, Cherries, Suzette, Chocolate Nutella, Blueberries

ASSORTED OMELETTES - Ham, Bacon, Tomatoes, Roasted Peppers, Mushrooms, Tofu, Onions, Chives, Asparagus, Smoked Salmon, Mozzarella Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Chorizo

SEAFOOD - Ceviche, Smoked Salmon, Seafood Paella, Jumbo Poached Shrimp, Bagels

SERVED HOT - Pasta Primavera with Basil Pesto, Crispy Bacon, Breakfast Sausages, Home Fries,
Whipped Yukon Gold Potatoes, Eggs Benedict, Truffle Polenta

CARVED TO ORDER - Roast Beef, Fresh Ham, Roasted Turkey

SALADS - Grilled Chicken with Napa Cabbage
Penne with Cherry Tomatoes, Pine Nuts
Chilled Asparagus Vinaigrette
Crunchy Haricots Verts Vinaigrette
Vine-Ripened Tomatoes & Fresh Mozzarella

BREAKFAST SWEETS - Assorted Muffins, Miniature Danish, Chef Selection of Croissants, Donuts, French Toast, Pancakes, Berry & Granola Parfait

DESSERT SELECTIONS - Banana Cream Pie, Peanut Butter Pie, Apple Tart, Cupcakes, Éclairs, Lemon Tartlets, Peanut Butter Brownies, Chocolate Mousse, Bread Pudding, Petits Fours, Linzer Torte, Brownie Trifle, Cheesecake, Crème Caramel, Carrot Cake, Cookies, Cannoli, Pecan Pies, Fruit Tartlets

With so much food, I think it would be a waste to get our own cake (its like bringing your own drink to an open bar!)
Plus whatever cake we get (from Costco or Whole Foods) will probably pale in comparison to the nice cakes they have.

What do you all think we should do?

Thank you!

I agree. I dont think an entire cake is necessary. How about just a cupcake with a candle for your lil girl. That way you can still get a pic of her blowing out a candle

Thanks for the post. (they have cupcakes there too! lol)

But my wife thinks that having a cupcake with a candle is too cheesy/skimpy looking.
:(

How about a whole plate of desserts with a candle? Might seem to random though.

And...Im not even sure at 1, she would be able to blow out the candle! :) (what age do they start listening/following directions?)

I would get a cake to bring out and sing to your DD even if it's a small cake or a large cupcake. You can get a vegan cake at whole foods. You can preorder and tell them how to decorate.

I don't think a big cake to feed everyone is not necessary. But, I would want either a small cake or large cupcake with candles for the photo ops. I don't think any of the guests would feel like they were missing out, with the huge menu of options available (BTW - what venue is that?!?!?)

I actually like the idea of a plate of desserts with a candle. It would look cute with a lil girl and a whole plate of goodies in front of her lol. Both my kids could blow out a candle at one year oldChat Icon

I agree with you and think a cake is too much. I would do a cupcake with a candle. Both my children had no idea how to blow out a candle at their 1st birthday.

>I'm not sure we can communicate the concept of blowing the candle out to her.
And she definitely doesn't follow instructions yet.
Last night, instead of lying down and going to sleep, she was crawling/standing around and doing the "PFFFTT" thing with her tongue at us.
And she climbs boxes and then stands up on it (despite us telling her not to do that)

I would buy or bake a small egg free cake for the Birthday girl. My dd has/had multiple food allergies and I used the Cherrybrook kitchen gluten, Dairy, egg, nut free vanilla cake mix to make her first birthday cupcakes- you can get the mix at whole foods, fairway or Shop rite (other places may have it).

I think a cake would be fine. I feel like the guests would be looking for one, Kwim? They can probably make an eggless cake if you need one

I would def get a mini cake from somewhere that she can take pics with and eat. Maybe like a 9" round cake type deal decorated for a birthday.

Blow the candles with her if she can't do it on their own. I am pretty sure that's what I did with my kids' 1st bdays.

What about getting the birthday girl a special cake or cupcake that she CAN eat? There are many bakeries that specialize it this -
That way, she can enjoy, and you can take the pics .......

Everyone ELSE can go for the other desserts

I would absolutely get a cake. Are you planning on singing happy birthday to her? If so, I feel a cake or cupcake is necessary. JMO
Plus it's nice for photo ops, etc.
You can always get a small vegan cake for her to try.

To me a birthday isn't a birthday without some sort of cake/cupcake.

I agree.
But if the venue is providing cupcakes and different types of cakes, pies, etc as part of the meal...why should we bring our own cake?

The only difference is...their cakes would be slices and ours would be a whole (uncut) cake.

The only reason I would see would be so that your child can taste it (being that she has an egg allergy). Otherwise, I would put a candle in a cake (or slice of) they provide.

I made DD her own little cake for her first birthday. I would do that, you can get someplace to do egg-free maybe?

Stop and Shop sells mini birthday cakes if you just want some cute photos. I think it's like $10

I agree it's unnecessary & would end up going to waste with so much other food around. I'd do what you said & put a candle in a cupcake, or on a plate of the desserts for the photos. She's not going to miss out on anything! DS didn't have any of his 1st bday cake & he didn't care.

You DEFINITELY need to sing happy birthday! That's a reason why I go to first birthdays - to think about this is the first of many she will be sung to!

Pick something, anything - a cake, a cupcake, a pie, and make it special for her, put a candle on it, and sing!
